Party Setup and Ability Combos
October 27, 2026 at 08:12 PM
Add chapter party options and practical ability combinations.
Build around a protector, a reliable way to stagger enemies, and enough healing to survive the next turn. The party options below combine those jobs in different ways as new characters and Visions become available.
Only four characters can fight at once, with fewer available during the opening. Combat explains active-party changes and reserve EXP. Learned abilities remain equippable after changing Visions, within the AP budget described in Abilities and Mastery. Keep a healing command available when moving a healer to an offensive Vision.
These are optional starting points. Use the Visions and learned abilities you have unlocked, then adjust for the next enemy's weaknesses and the recovery the party needs.
Chapter | Party option | Vision choices and purpose |
|---|---|---|
1 | Warrior of Light supports Rain's protection role and Provoke. Cloud lets Lasswell focus on damage and staggering. Give Fina Leah for travel healing, or consider Terra for boss magic when recovery is covered. Terra's Magic Boost increases MP consumption as well as damage. | |
2 | Rain, Lasswell, Fina and Lid. | Keep Warrior of Light on Rain and Cloud on Lasswell as a defensive and breaking core. Terra lets Lid focus on magic damage. Fina can use Tronn for Poison or Blind against susceptible bosses while retaining healing support. |
3 | Rain, Lasswell, Fina and Lid, with Nichol as a reserve option. | Continue the existing protection and magic roles. Firion is another Lasswell option against Lightning weaknesses. Nichol can stay in reserve while the existing core handles battles. Reserves still gain EXP. Use him actively when his formations fit the encounter. |
4 | Rain, Lid, Nichol and Fina. | Cloud or Tidus gives Rain Water attacks when that weakness is relevant. Nichol's formations support offense or defense, while Lid handles magic damage and Fina supplies healing. Lasswell can replace Fina for more breaking power when the remaining party can cover recovery. |
5 | Rain, Nichol, Fina and Sakura; Lid is an alternative magic attacker. | This keeps four active members while adding Sakura's magic. Her low physical defense makes physical-heavy bosses a reason to reconsider the lineup. Clive gives Rain Fire and Wind physical options. Choose a caster's Vision for the boss's weakness rather than giving every caster the same task. |
Story sequences can override these options. In Chapter 3, the temporary party change before the Old Town battle leaves Rain, Fina and Lid available. The Early Chapter Walkthrough keeps that route and its preparations together.
Warrior of Light teaches Multi-Cover and Physical Counter. Taking damage intended for allies gives a protector opportunities to retaliate with standard attacks. Cecil supplies Magic Counter for responses to magic attacks. This gives Rain a way to contribute damage while protecting others; keep healing and defensive buffs available as well.
After obtaining Wilhelm, Guard is another defensive option: it reduces damage taken by 75% until the user's next action. The LB gauge does not fill while Guard is active. Plan the protector's commands around when cover or damage reduction is needed.
A breaker can combine Warrior of Light's Restore HP on Stagger with Tronn's Restore MP on Stagger. The recovery is tied to landing a stagger, so aim the breaker at a target whose gauge can be emptied. Cloud's Restore MP on Critical Hit offers a separate recovery trigger, while Tronn's Fill LB on Stagger adds gauge gain. These effects help sustain repeated fights, but a critical hit and a stagger are different conditions.
Terra's LB Double Charge increases LB gauge gain, and Cloud's Fill Gauge provides another gauge-building option. A support with Leah's Pass the Torch can hand its action to the intended recipient when healing, protection or buffs are already covered. This makes unused support turns useful to a character being built around Limit Bursts.
Terra's Sharp Mind favors a multi-target skill directed at one enemy. Firion's Decimating Attacks instead improves area attacks aimed at all enemies. Choose the effect for the encounter rather than assuming both solve the same targeting problem. Terra's Tenebrous Rites increases magic damage against enemies with ailments or debuffs, so it can reward a teammate's successful debuff setup.
Magic Boost doubles the damage of a selected magic attack but raises that attack's MP cost by 50%. Tronn's Half MP Cost reduces skill MP expenditure, while stagger-based recovery can help a caster keep going. Reserve MP for recovery commands before filling the loadout with damage passives. Unlock the required masteries and check each character's available AP before equipping a combination.
