Red Fox Mercenary Corps
The Red Fox Mercenary Corps is a named faction in DragonSword: Awakening and the first mercenary organisation Hound13 has publicly detailed by name. It is the outfit that Kalien belongs to, and it provides the in-world scaffolding for her Spiritist work: a standing set of contracts, a reason to travel, and a flag she carries as she crosses the Continent of Orbis at Dana's side.

Overview
Hound13 frames the world of DragonSword: Awakening as a continent with "factions entangled in complex interests," and the Red Fox Mercenary Corps is the first of those factions to step forward with a name and a face. Its public identity is built around Kalien, the Spiritist who fights alongside the fire fox Sur, and around the broader role mercenary work plays in the story: a paid, portable reason to be anywhere on the map at any time.
What has been confirmed is the shape of the corps rather than a full roster. It is a working mercenary outfit, it fields at least one full Hero among its ranks, and its Spiritist is tied into one of the early personal storylines the game hangs on.
Leadership and Structure
No leader of the Red Fox Mercenary Corps has been publicly named. Kalien's title inside the corps is "Spiritist," which is described as a role rather than a rank: a summoner who binds and directs spirit companions in combat. The existence of a dedicated Spiritist role suggests the corps organises its members by combat specialty rather than by a single generic mercenary profile, but the full structure has not been shared outside the Kalien Hero Trailer.
Role in the Story
For players, the Red Fox Mercenary Corps is the first window onto the wider web of factions on the continent. Kalien's membership carries her across Orbis on paid work, but the thread running through her arc is personal rather than contractual: she and Dana are searching for Dana's mother, who is also Kalien's dear friend. Contracts set the route; the search sets the stakes. That mix of paid mercenary work and personal quest is what keeps the corps visible during Kalien's chapters rather than fading into background flavour.
The corps also sits inside the larger threat the game is built around. A Dragon has stirred on the continent for the first time in sixty years, and Hound13 has said the Heroes of the new generation are being drawn into that returning threat from whichever corner of the world they started in. Kalien's entry point is the Red Fox; other Heroes come in through their own affiliations.
Known Members
Member | Role in Corps | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Spiritist | Commands Sur, a fox spirit imbued with fire. Her combat style leans on flame attacks and the Stun Status Ailment, placing her as a ranged-pressure specialist inside the corps. | |
Sur | Bound fox spirit | Not a human member, but the corps' most visible non-human asset. Sur fights as an extension of Kalien's Spiritist role and is the reason the word "fox" sits in the corps' name from a marketing standpoint. |
Dana travels with Kalien but has not been publicly confirmed as a sworn member of the Red Fox Mercenary Corps. She is described as Kalien's companion on the search for her missing mother rather than as a contracted mercenary, so her exact status with the corps is still open.
Operating Region
The Red Fox Mercenary Corps operates on the Continent of Orbis, the same single-map setting the rest of DragonSword: Awakening takes place on. Kalien's arc explicitly "travels across" the continent, which implies the corps takes contracts broadly rather than anchoring itself to one kingdom or region. No home base, chapter house, or territorial boundary has been named publicly.
Contracts and Missions
Hound13 has not yet broken down a specific list of contracts the Red Fox Mercenary Corps takes. What the Kalien reveal establishes is that paid mercenary work is the in-universe reason Kalien and Dana keep moving, which lets their personal quest piggyback on whatever job is running at the time. Any detailed mission briefs, recurring employers, or rival corps have been held back for later pre-launch material or for the game itself.
Equipment and Style
The corps' public combat identity currently begins and ends with Kalien's Spiritist kit: fire magic, stun pressure, and a visible spirit companion on the field at all times. Whether the rest of the corps shares that ranged-caster profile, or whether Kalien is the outlier who brings magical support to a more conventional mercenary line-up, is not yet known. The Kalien Hero Trailer is the full extent of the corps' combat reveal as of the April 2026 announcement cycle.
Connection to Other Heroes
At launch, the Red Fox Mercenary Corps is a separate grouping from the unnamed mercenary band that Lute falls in with alongside Johnny and Castella. The two groups share a profession but not, so far as Hound13 has confirmed publicly, a chain of command. How the corps and Lute's party intersect as the main story builds toward the Dragon threat has not been detailed, and the same is true of the corps' relationship to the other Heroes still to be individually introduced in the run-up to the July 2026 release and the June 2026 Steam Next Fest demo (see Getting Started for the current release timeline).
Whether Kalien brings a familiar into the field in addition to Sur, or participates in the Dragon Riding traversal loop the same way other Heroes can, has not been shown in the Kalien Hero Trailer and should not be assumed either way.
First Revealed
The Red Fox Mercenary Corps was named in Hound13's April 2026 Kalien Hero Trailer, published on the game's Steam news channel as part of the same content slate that announced the self-published Steam release and the July 2026 launch window. No earlier Korean-version material is known to have used the corps name in the same form, so the Western relaunch is effectively the debut context for the faction as players will now encounter it.
