In Dimraeth, race is the base combat kit rather than a cosmetic choice. Your race decides how your character fights at the most basic level, and a class layers its own spells and identity on top. The pairing of the two is called an archetype, and each archetype has its own skill tree.
The Game Director put the point plainly in a November 2025 design post: "A Minotaur will always be a heavy, axe-wielding frontline presence, even if you lean into a more ranged class; a Fairy will always fight as a staff-wielding caster, even if you choose Brawler." Race is therefore the first decision in character creation, and it is the one that constrains everything after it.
Four races have been named in first-party material. As of 2026-09-12 no other race has been named on any first-party surface. The race showcase on the official site has four slots with two of them left empty, and it should be read as a partial preview rather than as the roster.
Race | Status | What is known |
|---|---|---|
Human | Playable in the demo and in both playtests | The most populous race in Mirkea, characterised by ingenuity and adaptability. Patch notes record the Human race as designed in October 2024. |
Minotaur | Playable in the demo and in both playtests | Stands 7 to 10 feet tall with a bull’s head and curved horns that can reach several feet. Noted for intelligence and tactics rather than size alone. It was the first race finished as a production character, with its design completed in September 2024 and male and female models built in October 2024. |
Fairy | Named in design material; not offered in the demo or the playtests | Fights as a staff-wielding caster. The Fairy has been in the build since May 2023, with revamped artwork in January 2024 and its own mining animation by May 2024. As of 2026-09-12 no first-party source states which build the Fairy first becomes playable in. |
Elf | Announced as a new race for the Early Access build of 15 September 2026 | Added to the game in May 2023, removed from the demo build in December 2023, and re-announced as new for Early Access in September 2026. See the development history section below. |
Element | How race affects it |
|---|---|
Weapon and stance | Race fixes the shape of your fighting, not your class. A Minotaur is a heavy frontline presence with an axe whatever class sits on top; a Fairy is a staff caster even as a Brawler. |
Attribute costs | Attributes are raised by spending XP, and the cost of each attribute is set by the race and class pairing. A Fairy Magician pays much more to raise Strength than a Minotaur Brawler does. See Progression and Leveling. |
Spells | Race and class each supply their own spells, on top of the universal magic granted by crafted spellbooks. Five spells can be equipped at a time. See Spells and Magic. |
Basic attack chain | Each race has its own basic attack combo chain of 3 to 4 hits, stated in a July 2025 combat post. The chain belongs to the race, not the class. See Combat. |
Guard | Every character has a standard dash and a race-specific guard, each with its own cooldown. |
Archetype | Race plus class produces an archetype with a skill tree carrying spells and passives that no other archetype can use. |
Male and female options for every race arrive with the Early Access build. Before that, only the Minotaur is recorded as having both models, built in October 2024.
Customisation covers colour for hair, skin and clothing across all races. The developers describe this explicitly as colour customisation and not a full 3D morphing system, so the range is palette work rather than reshaping a face. Character customisation was introduced at the technical playtest of late January and early February 2026, and improved customisation is listed among the changes arriving with Early Access.
The stated target for the 1.0 release is "8+ races and 6 classes", which the developers describe as at least 48 archetypes. That is an intention for a version of the game that does not exist yet, not a description of what ships on 15 September 2026. As of 2026-09-12 the remaining races in that target have not been named anywhere in first-party material, and this wiki will not guess at them.
The playable roster has both shrunk and grown. Three races that existed in 2023 were removed and have never been confirmed back.
Race | Recorded in the build | Removed |
|---|---|---|
Troll | Added as a character on 1 May 2023 | 10 December 2023 |
Centaur | Sound effects created 8 May 2023; its auto attack range was tuned down from 1.8 to 1.5 the same month | 10 December 2023 |
Griffon | Sound effects created 8 May 2023; its collider size was adjusted in August 2023 | 10 December 2023 |
Elf | Added as a character on 29 May 2023 | 10 December 2023, then re-announced for Early Access in September 2026 |
The December 2023 note describes the change as removing these races from the demo, which reads as a scope cut for that build rather than a stated cancellation. Only the Elf has come back. As of 2026-09-12 the Griffon, Centaur and Troll have not been mentioned again in any first-party post, and none of them should be treated as playable content. Nothing published states that the 2023 Elf and the Early Access Elf share an implementation, so the 2026 announcement of a "new race" is not in conflict with the 2023 record.
Race has been a distinct technical object since the earliest builds. Patch notes from 2023 record name-tag heights set per race and collider sizes that vary per race, and a May 2024 note adds "a base speed formula for each race to differentiate the races more". Those lines prove the systems existed when they were written. They carry no numbers and no guarantee of surviving unchanged into the Early Access build. More of this record is covered in Development History.
Not every race in the setting is a playable one. Earlwood Village is described as home to Minotaurs, Elves, Dwarves and Humans, bound "not by blood or crown, but by circumstance", and as a town of outcasts standing apart from a Mirkea still divided along ancient lines. Dwarves appear there as inhabitants of the world; as of 2026-09-12 no first-party source describes a playable Dwarf.
The Minotaur Empire exists as a power in the setting. Manga, the blacksmith of Earlwood and a character you meet early, is a former warrior of that empire whose cut-off horns mark his exile for refusing to take part in a brutal raid.
