Combat in Dimraeth is deliberate rather than frantic. Every action spends stamina, enemies telegraph their attacks with readable wind-ups, and the storefront states the loop in one line: "Manage your stamina, read enemy telegraphs, and position yourself before choosing to strike, dodge, block, or parry."
The game director set the goal out in a July 2025 design post: "We knew from day one that we didn't want traditional top-down ARPG combat with endless hordes and ability spam." The stated inspirations are roguelikes, MOBA-style spell systems and, in the post's own words, "a touch of Soulslike tension". Three pillars are named: defence, attacks and spells.

Vitals and Needs
Bar | What is known |
|---|---|
Health | The damage pool. Restored by potions, and its maximum can be raised by cooked food. |
Concentration | A third vital alongside health and stamina. Potions restore it and food buffs can raise its maximum. As of 12 September 2026 no first-party post states exactly what spends it. |
Stamina | The universal action currency, spent by dodging, blocking, casting, striking and sprinting. |
Hunger | A tracked need. Development notes from October 2023 record hunger and thirst affecting player speed and strength, and consumables being usable only when the meter is not already full. |
Thirst | A tracked need, handled the same way as hunger. |
The Stamina Economy
Stamina is the constraint the rest of the system is built around. The July 2025 design post is explicit that "dodging, blocking, casting, and striking all consume stamina", and sprinting, bound to holding shift, draws on the same bar. Defence is not free either: "Unless you're running a heavy-defense build, every hit you take comes at a cost."
That budget is what makes positioning matter. The post warns that spacing and timing are the real skills involved: "If you're planning to cast a long-windup spell, make sure you've actually got the window for it." Cooked food can raise the maximum stamina pool and its regeneration rate, which is one reason crafting feeds directly back into fights.
Defence: Dash, Guard, Block and Parry
Every character has a standard dash and a race-specific guard, "each with their own cooldown". Dash exists as a movement spell rather than a separate button, having been implemented that way in February 2025, and a parry was added as a named action in December 2024. Blocking, dodging and parrying all draw on stamina, so a defensive pattern has to be paid for in the same currency as offence.
Reading the enemy is the other half. "Enemies signal their attacks with readable wind-ups and clear tells", which is what makes a parry or a late dodge a decision rather than a reflex.
Basic Attacks and the Race Kit
Light attacks are not filler. "Each race has its own combo chain (3-4 hits) that creates a rhythm in combat", and the design post notes that even magic-heavy builds keep using them late in a run "thanks to on-hit passives and synergies". The combo chain belongs to the race, not the class.
Race is also the base kit, which is why it constrains a build more than class does: "A Minotaur will always be a heavy, axe-wielding frontline presence, even if you lean into a more ranged class; a Fairy will always fight as a staff-wielding caster, even if you choose Brawler." The pairing of race and class is what produces an Archetype.
Race | Base kit in combat |
|---|---|
A heavy, axe-wielding frontline presence, whatever class it is paired with. | |
A staff-wielding caster, whatever class it is paired with, including Brawler. | |
As of 12 September 2026 no first-party post describes the Human base kit in the same terms it uses for Minotaur and Fairy. | |
Arrives with the Early Access build. Development notes from 2023 describe an Elf with a ranged auto-attack, but that version was pulled from the demo in December 2023 and the current implementation has not been described. |
Spells in Combat
Five spells are equipped at a time, and the limit is the design. "Though you'll have many spells to choose from, your equipped slots are limited, so selecting the right set becomes a strategic decision." Spells come from race, class, the archetype skill tree and crafted spellbooks, all covered on spells and magic.
The stated design goal is "chain interactions and status synergy". The July 2025 post gives three worked illustrations: ignite an enemy with fire and follow it with an inferno, stack bleed alongside a teammate to trigger an execution finisher, or layer frost and then freeze the target in place with a javelin of ice. These are examples of the intent rather than documented mechanics, and as of 12 September 2026 none of the three has been published with numbers.
Status Effects and Resistances
Status | What is known |
|---|---|
Burning | The fire status. Named in the November 2025 character design post as the anchor of a coordinated co-op fire build, where one archetype spreads it and another converts it into single-target damage. |
Bleed | Stacks. The design post uses teammates stacking bleed to trigger an execution finisher as its co-op example. |
Poison | Builds up rather than applying instantly. Crafted cures clear heavy bleed and poison buildup. |
Stunned | A tracked status. A Brawler spell was tuned in July 2024 to deal 25 percent more damage to stunned targets. |
Chill | A tracked status with its own visual effect from September 2024. |
Rage | A tracked status with its own visual effect and stacking behaviour from September 2024. |
Elemental resistances exist as a separate layer. Cooked food can raise them, and the developers describe preparing a specific resistance before a boss "with a specific damage profile" as standard practice at higher levels.
Enemy AI
The current enemy behaviour model is described in one sentence: "We've designed Dimraeth's enemy AI using a token-based system inspired by God of War and Ghost of Tsushima. This system ensures that enemies fight in waves and with coordination, rather than chaotic mob-rushing." The stated result is that a fight offers "genuine openings to react to, not just spam to endure".
That system sits on top of a longer history. A monster AI rebuild in 2024 introduced monster reset types, spell weighting, reactions, targeting types, separate in-combat and out-of-combat behaviours and a swarm option. No first-party post says whether the token system replaced that layer or was built over it.
Enemies also scale to the group. A change made in May 2024 shifted scaling from the number of players on the server to the number of players nearby, so a large session does not inflate a fight that only two people are in.
Difficulty
Three world difficulties, Easy, Moderate and Hard, have been in the game since July 2023, and Moderate became the default in April 2025. Difficulty levels appear on the Early Access feature list published on 2 September 2026, but they are not new: that entry most likely describes a revision or a first public exposure rather than a first appearance.
Difficulty is a hard partition in multiplayer. Characters on different difficulties cannot join each other. It also changes rules and not only numbers: friendly fire exists on Hard, and inventories empty on death at harder world difficulties.
Bosses, Elites and Bounties
"Boss fights are a defining part of the Dimraeth experience." Each boss is built with its own mechanics and abilities, can be taken solo or in a group, and is framed by the developers as a test of a build rather than only a loot source. The Corrupted Treant is one boss named in development notes.
Early Access adds "Major bosses for each region", alongside new elites and new dungeons. Bounties are the repeatable layer: introduced as a Deed content type at the technical playtest in early 2026, "bounties let you replay them with scaling difficulty and rewards, so you can push higher ranks and earn better loot". See quests and deeds.
Death and Recovery
A defeated player leaves a corpse that holds their inventory and equipped runes, and other players can interact with it. Tombstones were added in March 2024. Allies can revive a downed player, and some crafted potions can be thrown to heal a teammate mid-fight, which makes co-op a factor in how much risk a group can absorb. At harder world difficulties the inventory empties on death instead.
Controls
Supported input is keyboard and mouse, gamepad, and a WASD plus mouse hybrid. Full controller and Steam Deck support was the headline focus of the technical playtest in early 2026.
