Ultimate Perks

Hedged the reported Ultimate Perk thresholds, which guides describe inconsistently
Ultimate Perks are the capstone abilities at the far end of each of the three Skill Trees. There are nine of them, three in each tree, and they are the sharpest build commitment the game asks for, because only one per tree can ever be unlocked in a single playthrough.
Taking an Ultimate Perk permanently closes off the other two in that tree for the rest of the run. That exclusivity is well corroborated and is what makes the pick matter. Nothing can be undone afterwards either: at launch there is no way to reset or refund spent skill points, and no medic or shrine service offers one (as of September 2026). A pre-launch guide had described medics resetting ordinary perks and ultimates being swappable on the fly, and an earlier pre-release write-up described unlimited resets through a medic, but coverage of the shipped game contradicts both. Players who want to see a second ultimate in the same tree have fallen back on reloading a manual save made before the purchase. Because a run is also bounded by a thirty day clock, most players reach the point of being able to afford an ultimate late enough that the decision effectively settles what that character became.

The limit applies per tree rather than across the game. A player who spends heavily in two trees can in principle take one ultimate in each, but the point cost makes spreading investment that thin expensive.
Tree | Requirement |
|---|---|
Swordmastery | Reported by guides as around 35 skill points, described variously as the price or as the points needed in the Swordmastery tree. |
Witchcraft | Reported by guides as around 35 skill points, described variously as the price or as the points needed in the Witchcraft tree. |
Vampirism | Tied to Corruption, raised by feeding on blood rather than by spending points; one guide puts the deeper Vampirism nodes at around Corruption 15. |
The Vampirism requirement is the odd one out and is worth planning around, because Corruption is earned by drinking, not by levelling. See Blood Craving and Vampiric Powers for how feeding works and what it costs.
Reaching either point-gated threshold takes most of a run. Perk points arrive on level up and are spent at road shrines. The contents of each tree are set out on the Skill Trees page rather than repeated here.
All nine are named in the game's own perk data, as relayed by databases compiled from the game files, and walkthroughs of the shipped game use the same names. The studio itself has not published a roster. The effects are firmer for some than for others. Last Stand, Runic Bulwark and Renounce Death are described the same way by several accounts of the shipped game and match the game's own effect text, and Sword Sage and Entwined Torment now have post-launch descriptions as well. The rest still rest on a single guide or on pre-launch text, and the table marks those as reported.
Ultimate Perk | Tree | Notes | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
Last Stand | Swordmastery | Pre-release guides gave a 150 percent increase; accounts of the shipped game agree on doubling. | Doubles Coen's weapon damage while his health is below 30 percent. |
Tactical Mastery | Swordmastery | Effect text comes from a pre-launch guide. | Reported to restore some activation charge when a Swordmastery ability is used. |
Sword Sage | Swordmastery | Post-launch guides add that the reset is triggered by a kill. | Resets active ability cooldowns whenever Coen kills an enemy, which makes it strongest against groups. |
Runic Bulwark | Witchcraft | Pre-release guides described an earlier shield version that blocked three attacks; the shipped perk works differently. See Hex Magic. | Gives a 15 percent chance to apply a random hex to an opponent whenever Coen lands a Perfect Block. |
Entwined Torment | Witchcraft | A pre-launch guide limited the effect to the first Witchcraft ability used in a fight; a guide to the shipped game describes it without that condition. | Lets Coen's hexes affect two targets at once. |
Aether Cascade | Witchcraft | Effect text comes from a pre-launch guide. | Reported to cut the cost of the next ability by one activation charge after any ability is used. |
Renounce Death | Vampirism | The revive capstone of the night form. | Once per combat, instead of dying, Coen gains temporary immortality and lifesteal on his attacks. One guide puts the window at about ten seconds. |
Lethal Crescendo | Vampirism | Suited to claw builds. | Boosts claw damage after a kill. One build guide puts the bonus at 20 percent and says it stacks. |
Sanguine Renewal | Vampirism | Effect text comes from a pre-launch guide. | Reported to reset ability cooldowns when Voracious Bite is used to feed. |
Because one ultimate per tree is all a run gets, the three capstones inside a tree are direct competitors rather than complements. Launch guides do not agree on a single best pick. In Swordmastery they weigh Last Stand against Sword Sage or Tactical Mastery; in Witchcraft, Runic Bulwark for block-focused builds against Entwined Torment for fights against groups; and in Vampirism, Renounce Death as the safer all-round choice against Lethal Crescendo for claw builds.
Three separate achievements cover unlocking an Ultimate Perk in each tree: Master of Arms for Swordmastery, Arch Warlock for Witchcraft and Creature of the Night for Vampirism. Because only one ultimate per tree can be taken in a run, all three can still be earned in a single playthrough by investing across all three disciplines. See Achievements.
The ordinary perks that build toward an ultimate carry a timing label of Daytime, Nighttime or Anytime, marking the phase in which their effect applies. Two of them widen the build rather than deepening it: Forbidden Sigils in Witchcraft and Master Fencer in Swordmastery each open an additional ability slot in their tree.
Tree | Documented perks | Active abilities often listed with them |
|---|---|---|
Witchcraft | Frugal Witchcraft, Forbidden Sigils, Amalgam, Font of Life, Lasting Malediction, Witchcraft Mastery | Mercurial Fervour, Life Lock |
Swordmastery | Sustained Focus, Second Skin II, Perfect Block, Perfect Riposte, Sharp Eye, Master Fencer, Endless Effort, Precision | Broad Swing, Swiftness |
Vampirism | Endless Hunger, Nourishing Blood, Hastened Corruption, Shadow Dweller, Dimension Reach, Mandrake Ward | Shapeshift, Death From Above, Voracious Bite |
Perks are bought at road shrines and cost skill points plus a slice of in-game time, usually one to three segments. See Shrines and Time as a Resource.
Two of the perks above arrive through quests rather than purchase. Mandrake Ward comes from eating the mandrake with Lacra at the end of The Night of Horrors, and one walkthrough reports that it lets Coen survive a lethal hit once per night and regain three health segments. Font of Life is granted by choosing to drink from the Font of Life in Stronger Than Achilles.
Not every perk on the way up is simply bought. Some, or their higher levels, need a manual first: a consumable item sold by merchants, handed out as a quest reward, or found at random in searchable bookshelves. Others sit behind a specific quest or boss fight, and the night tree gates its own on Corruption. The practical consequence is that two players at the same level can have very different perks available, and not every run will even be offered the chance to buy every perk.
