Artifacts and Abyss Fragments

Major update from features video: artifacts as fragments of the Abyss, detailed progression role, stat increases, skill unlocks, world-observed skills
Artifacts are fragments of the Abyss that have fallen to the world below. They are the primary progression mechanic in Crimson Desert, crucial to a player's growth from a survivor into a formidable Greymane. Unlike standard weapons or armor, artifacts provide permanent progression upgrades, passive effects, and lore entries. They are obtained through quests, combat, exploration, boss defeats, and interaction with Traces of the Abyss.
Acquiring artifacts is crucial to progression in Crimson Desert. As described in the official features overview, artifacts lie at the end of many trials — in the possession of powerful bosses and hidden across Pywel, including up in the Abyss itself. Artifacts enable players to:
Increase core stats like health and stamina
Unlock new skills for more skill chaining potential
Enhance existing skills, increasing their power and effectiveness
Increase combat and exploration capabilities, such as extending stamina for gliding and climbing
Players decide which direction their progression takes by choosing which artifacts to pursue. For example, a player may want to upgrade stamina quickly to run and glide around the world longer for exploration. Alternatively, a player might focus on unlocking and upgrading diverse grappling skills to continuously slam enemies into the ground in combat. The choice of which skills to combine and unleash during combat defines each player's unique approach.
Some skills and upgrades cannot be obtained through artifacts alone and must be observed firsthand out in the world. This means that exploration and paying attention to the environment can yield progression rewards that are unavailable through any other means.
Combat artifacts — provide passive stat bonuses such as increased damage, critical hit chance, or elemental resistance
Utility artifacts — improve non-combat functions like movement speed, gathering efficiency, or mount stamina
Lore artifacts — contain text and visual entries that fill out the codex, detailing the history of factions, regions, and the Abyss
Abyss artifacts — infused with Abyss energy, these provide abilities tied to the Axiom Bracelet upgrade path
Defeating major bosses such as the Frost Drake, White Horn, and Hexe Marie
Completing faction quests for organizations like House Celeste and the Golden Star
Exploring hidden areas, underwater caves, mountain peaks, and ruins
Interacting with Traces of the Abyss that contain artifact drops
Venturing up into the Abyss itself
Players can equip a limited number of artifacts at once. The number of available artifact slots increases as Kliff progresses through the main story. Artifacts can be swapped freely outside of combat. Some artifacts have synergy bonuses when equipped together, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations based on the challenges ahead.
Certain artifacts can be upgraded using crafting materials. Upgraded artifacts gain stronger passive effects or unlock secondary properties. Abyss artifacts specifically require materials gathered from traces and corrupted enemies. The upgrade process uses the same crafting stations as weapon and armor modification.
Details on specific named artifacts will be added after the game's launch on March 19, 2026
Preview footage has shown artifacts with visual effects when equipped, including glowing auras and particle trails
Boss-specific artifacts appear to carry thematic connections to the boss they drop from
