Initial version with full details on location, mechanics, controls, rewards, Hero's Handshake challenge, and tips
Arm Wrestling is one of several minigames available in Crimson Desert. It is a Test of Strength activity where Kliff sits down across from an opponent and attempts to force their arm down through a combination of rapid button presses and timed quick-time events (QTEs). The minigame is first encountered during the Where Rumors Gather main quest in the Trials of Kindness arc, where it is required for story progression. After completing the quest, players can return to replay arm wrestling matches at any time for coin rewards and to pursue the Hero's Handshake challenge series.
Arm Wrestling takes place at the inn in the City of Hernand, commonly referred to as Hernand Inn. The activity becomes available during Chapter 2 of the main story when Kliff visits Hernand as part of the Where Rumors Gather quest. To start a match, walk up to the arm wrestler sitting at the table near the entrance of the inn. Aim at him with L1/LB (controller) or right-click (mouse), then press the challenge button: X/A on controller or R on keyboard.
The first match during the Where Rumors Gather quest is free. After completing the quest, replaying arm wrestling costs 20 Alms per session. Each session consists of multiple rounds with increasingly difficult opponents.
An arm wrestling match plays out in alternating phases. During each round, players switch between a button-mashing phase and a timing phase until the on-screen meter is filled completely in their favor.
When the round begins, the screen displays a horizontal gauge. The goal is to push the gauge into the red zone by pressing the action button as quickly as possible. The faster you mash, the more the bar shifts toward your side. This phase accounts for most of the progress in each round, so sustained speed is critical.

After several seconds of mashing, a circular dial appears on screen with a rotating needle and a white (grey) wedge. You must stop mashing and wait for the needle to enter the white zone, then press the confirm button at the right moment. A successful hit fills a large chunk of the red meter and gives Kliff a significant advantage. Missing the timing lets your opponent recover ground.

The white wedge always appears on the left side of the circle, and the needle rotates clockwise. Knowing this allows you to anticipate the timing window rather than reacting to it. The mashing and QTE phases alternate multiple times throughout a single round until the gauge is fully red (win) or fully white (loss).
A full arm wrestling session consists of four consecutive rounds with progressively harder opponents. Each round requires faster mashing and tighter QTE timing than the last. The fourth and final opponent is the champion. Beating all four in a row without losing is required for the Hero's Handshake challenge.
Round | Opponent | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
1 | Guard | Easy |
2 | Guard | Medium |
3 | Guard | Hard |
4 | Champion | Very Hard |
Losing any round ends the session. You can start over by paying the 20 Alms entry fee again (or for free during the initial quest).
Winning arm wrestling matches earns coin rewards. The initial quest completion during Where Rumors Gather awards 20 Alms. Subsequent victories in replayed sessions pay out Copper and Silver Coins, with higher payouts for defeating later-round opponents and the champion.
Reward Source | Reward |
|---|---|
Quest completion (Where Rumors Gather) | 20 Alms |
Winning regular matches | Copper (Money) |
Defeating the champion | Silver Coin (Money) |
Arm Wrestling is tied to the Hero's Handshake challenge series, which falls under the Test of Strength category within the Challenges system. Completing all Test of Strength challenges (along with other minigame sub-categories) contributes toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement.
Challenge | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
Hero's Handshake I | Win 3 consecutive arm wrestling matches, then defeat the champion | Sealed Abyss Artifact |
The Hero's Handshake I challenge unlocks when you first interact with the arm wrestling table at Hernand Inn. Completing it awards a Sealed Abyss Artifact, which can be used to unlock new skills or upgrade existing ones on the Abyss Skill Tree. Minigame challenges unlock upon first interaction with a minigame location rather than through finding artifacts in the open world.
Use two fingers on keyboard. If playing on PC, alternate between two fingers when mashing the E key. This produces faster input than using a single finger and helps maintain speed across longer rounds.
Roll your thumb on controller. Rather than tapping the button stiffly with your thumb tip, roll your thumb across the face button in a circular motion. This technique generates faster presses with less fatigue, which matters in the later rounds where sustained speed is essential.
Tilt the controller for comfort. Holding the controller at a 90-degree angle can give a more natural grip for rapid mashing. This position also makes it easier to quickly reach the confirm button when the QTE prompt appears.
Anticipate the QTE, do not react to it. The white wedge always sits on the left side of the circular dial, and the needle always rotates clockwise. Once you learn the needle's speed, you can start pressing just before it reaches the zone rather than waiting until you see it there. Anticipation beats reaction time every round.
Switch to Performance mode for slower QTE speed. If the QTE spinner moves too fast, open the Settings menu, go to the Others tab, select Options, and change the graphics preset from Quality to Performance. Running at a higher frame rate can slow down the needle's visual speed on the dial, giving you a wider effective timing window.
Do not panic near the finish line. When the gauge is almost full, it can be tempting to mash frantically. Stay consistent with your rhythm instead. Overexertion in the final stretch often leads to missed QTE prompts, which lets the opponent claw back progress.
Watch for opponent resistance drops. During the mashing phase, there are brief moments where the opponent's resistance weakens and the bar moves faster. Increase your press speed during these windows to maximize progress before the next QTE phase begins.
Manage your stamina across rounds. The session involves four consecutive matches with no break. If you burn out your fingers on the first two rounds, you will struggle against the harder opponents. Find a sustainable mashing rhythm for the early rounds and save your peak speed for the champion.
Arm Wrestling is introduced as part of the Where Rumors Gather main quest during Chapter 2 of the story. After being rescued from the river by a merchant, Kliff arrives in the City of Hernand and heads to the inn. A guardsman in a metal helm is seated at a table near the entrance, and Kliff must challenge him to an arm wrestling match to progress the quest. Winning this initial match completes the arm wrestling portion of the quest and allows progression to the next objective, the Mysterious Man quest.
This introductory match serves as a tutorial for the arm wrestling mechanics. It is the easiest opponent in the lineup, so players can learn the button mashing and QTE timing without much pressure before attempting the harder follow-up rounds for the Hero's Handshake challenge.
The Hernand region hosts several other minigames beyond Arm Wrestling:
