Added the Observatory premise, the What If rift versions of Edward, and his tools and home base
Edward Kenway is the protagonist of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. A Welsh privateer operating in the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century, Edward begins the story as a self-interested mercenary motivated more by wealth and adventure than ideology. Over the course of the game his encounters with the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order reshape his values, and he earns the skills and convictions of a true Assassin.
Edward is a brash Welsh privateer turned pirate who is swept, largely against his intentions, into the long war between the Assassins and the Templars. The thread that pulls him through the story is the hunt for the Observatory, a mythical device able to track anyone in the world from a sample of their blood. Chasing it forces him to face what his greed has cost the people around him and sets him on the path of redemption that ends with the Brotherhood.
Matt Ryan, who voiced Edward in the 2013 original, returns to the role in Resynced. Ryan recorded entirely new lines to match the rebuilt performance and the new scenes written for the remake.
The core arc from the original is preserved in Resynced: Edward's transformation from a privateer fighting for personal gain into a man who genuinely understands and embraces the Assassin creed. His conflict with the Templars, his relationships with historical pirates, and his time commanding the Jackdaw remain central to the experience.
Resynced expands on several relationships. Historical figures Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonny, and Charles Vane all receive expanded storylines compared to the original. The creative team worked to deepen these partnerships and give them more narrative weight.
Edward fights with a pair of swords as his primary melee weapons, backed by pistols, a rope dart, smoke bombs, and a blowpipe loaded with sleep or berserk darts. The Hidden Blade is his, but in the remake it is reserved for stealth kills and contextual executions rather than open combat, which is covered in detail on the combat system page. At sea he commands the Jackdaw, and from partway through the story he keeps a home base on Great Inagua, an upgradeable villa and village described on the setting and locations page.
Original lead writer Darby McDevitt returned to write new material specifically for Resynced. This includes two fully new story scenes and one amended scene, for a total of three scenes that did not exist or appeared in a different form in the 2013 game. One of the new scenes features Edward's wife Caroline, adding dimension to that relationship which was largely conveyed through backstory in the original.

The remake's modern-day layer is built out of optional rifts surfaced through the Animus Hub, and several of them ask what Edward's life would have looked like had he chosen differently. One follows a version who kept his promise and returned to Caroline instead of turning to piracy. These are presented as alternate genetic memories shown by an artificial intelligence rather than as events in the main story, so they sit beside his arc rather than inside it.
