The Animus Hub is the layer Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced boots into before the campaign itself. It is a series-wide front end rather than something built for this game alone, and in Resynced it carries the modern-day story, a set of optional challenges, and a cosmetics Exchange. It replaces the office sequences the original game used for its present-day framing, and it is where the What If rifts described on the new story content page are surfaced.
Memories
Launching the game opens the Memories view, a timeline of the series presented as a set of entries the player can move between. Selecting an entry brings up descriptions, trailers, and overview material without leaving the game. For a returning player the practical use is the recap: the Hub surfaces the most recent story beats from the save being played, so a session picked up after a long gap starts with a reminder of where Edward left off.
Rifts
Rifts are the optional narrative content the Hub gates. In Resynced they take the form of What If scenarios, alternate versions of Edward's genetic memories shown by an artificial intelligence that has control over the Animus. Two have been described directly: one follows a version of Edward who kept his promise and returned to Caroline rather than turning to piracy, and another follows a version of Blackbeard who accepted the King's pardon. Four rift quests are in the game. They are not simply cutscenes. Rifts remix environments the player already knows, run through glitched versions of the world, and include boss encounters, and they pay out in-game rewards alongside the story material.
Challenges and Rewards
The Hub's challenge layer runs on three tiers that feed into each other.
System | What It Is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Synchronization | A running set of character, story, and Hub-specific goals | Progress and rewards are claimed from the Hub screen rather than in the campaign |
Anomalies | Time-limited challenges that refresh weekly | Short objectives such as sinking a ship, opening a chest, or hunting an animal |
Projects | Groups of Anomalies bundled into one larger objective | Structured as tiered reward tracks and tracked from the Hub |
Crossover Projects | Projects that span more than one game using the Animus Hub | Riptides and Undertow were the first pair, and completing them unlocks rewards in each game involved |
Crossover Projects are the newest addition and the reason the Hub matters outside a single playthrough. Where a normal Project is confined to Resynced, a Crossover Project can be advanced across any Hub game the player owns, and its rewards are themed after the other title rather than this one.
The Vault
Lore unlocked through rifts and Projects collects in the Vault: journal entries, notes, and messages between characters that sit outside the campaign's own database. The Vault also shows encrypted files that have not been found or decrypted yet, so it doubles as a checklist of what is still out there.
The Exchange and Keys
The Exchange is the Hub's cosmetics store. It is stocked with outfits, weapons, and ship cosmetics, including pieces drawn from elsewhere in the series, and its stock rotates. Purchases are made with Keys.
Keys cannot be bought. They are earned only by playing: collected in the open world, awarded for Synchronization milestones, and paid out across a Project's reward tiers. Ubisoft has stated plainly that nothing in the Exchange is a paid reward. Keys are held on the Ubisoft account rather than on a single save, so a balance earned in one Animus Hub game can be spent in another. This is separate from the paid cosmetic packs covered on the editions and pre-order bonuses page, which are bought with money and delivered directly rather than through the Exchange.
Scope
The Animus Hub is shared infrastructure that predates Resynced, and parts of it, including the artificial intelligence behind the rifts, were introduced in an earlier entry. This page covers only what the Hub does inside Resynced. Content that exists only in another game on the platform is out of scope here, and rewards described as unlocking in a second title are noted as such rather than documented as Resynced content.
