Bosses are the structural punctuation of Valor Mortis. Three have been named publicly before launch, only one has been playable, and the studio has named boss design as one of four areas it was still reworking after the demo.
The Named Fights
Boss | Type | Status before launch |
|---|---|---|
General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer | Corrupted officer | Playable in every hands-on build since August 2025. Confirmed as the boss at the end of Chapter II in the full game |
Corrupted officer turned abomination | Shown in the November 2025 trailer and in July 2026 concept art. No published account places him in a playable build | |
Abomination | Shown in the April 2026 gameplay trailer. Not present in the October 2025 playtest or in either level of the 2026 demo |
What the Studio Says About Boss Design
From the reveal onward the studio has said bosses are meant to be punishing and to require precise timing, and it has called them a staple of the genre it is working in. The April 2026 trailer teased a further fight it described only as new and disgusting, saying it had more boss ideas to show, which means the roster above is not the full list.
After the demo it was more specific. "Variety in boss battles" was one of four named work areas, covering both how much the fights differ from one another and how the difficulty curve runs between them.
What Hands-On Accounts Add
Coverage of the playable builds fills in a little that the studio has not.
Observation | Confidence |
|---|---|
General Lothaire is a two-phase fight, answered by shooting weak points, blocking to build posture damage, and stunning him with the Fire Transmutation | Described in a hands-on account of the demo |
The demo's later level contained a second boss, which one account found significantly easier than Lothaire | Single account, and the boss is unnamed |
Bosses in general are multi-phase and built around arena shape as much as move set | Repeated across several accounts |
Optional bosses exist somewhere in the game | A single account from 2025, uncorroborated since |
The unnamed second demo boss is worth flagging. No official post identifies it, and it cannot safely be assumed to be Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois simply because his trailer shares that level's setting.
The Lothaire Lesson
The clearest thing the pre-launch cycle has taught about boss design here is about placement rather than tuning. In the demo, General Lothaire closed Chapter I after about thirty minutes of play, and the most common criticism the studio received was that he was too unforgiving. Its answer was that the fight is intended to close Chapter II in the finished game, by which point a player has spent longer with a first-person combat system that has no real precedent in the genre and has levelled up. The studio expects that to smooth the curve considerably.
That is worth carrying into launch as an expectation: the game's bosses appear to be tuned against a player who has had time with the systems, not against a player who has just picked them up.
The Shared Toolkit
No boss-specific mechanic has been announced. What has been confirmed applies across fights:
Weak points that glow on some enemies and can be detonated with the off-hand firearm, or opened directly by the rapier without a shot. See Weapons.
Stagger built up through pressure, opening a finisher.
A posture meter that drains as you parry, opening a heavy punish.
A target lock the studio has said it is refining for better camera tracking, smarter prioritisation and longer range.
Limited healing flask charges refilled only at lanterns.
The Combat page covers all of these in detail.
What Is Still Open
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, the studio has not published a boss count, has not named a final boss, has not given health or phase counts for any fight, and has not said whether The Relentless appear as a boss or only as an elite enemy type. Nothing has been said about optional or hidden bosses, though hands-on coverage of a 2026 showing described mini-bosses guarding optional side areas.
Reading large enemies
The studio confirmed dynamic field-of-view scaling in September 2026 to help players read encounters with huge bosses. It does not supply boss damage, attack timings or a final boss count, and the size of a depicted enemy alone does not establish its identity.
