Eternal Guard

Created Eternal Guard faction page covering composition, named figures and first-party references
The Eternal Guard is what Napoleon's Grande Armee has become in Valor Mortis after the plague reached it. It is the game's principal enemy faction, the organisation William belonged to before he died, and the source of most of the soldiers he now has to fight his way through.
The store listing uses the name directly, describing the player's mobility as the way to outmanoeuvre the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon's Eternal Guard. The studio also uses it in its own voice: writing up its gamescom 2026 showing in September 2026 it said "Our Eternal Guard stood tall, inspiring faith in Emperor Napoleon", keeping the marketing in the fiction's register. The name turns up inside the world as well. Concept art for readable props includes a folded Eternal Guard order carrying a crest, a signature and a red wax seal, which places the faction on the paperwork William finds as well as on the men he kills.

Tier | Examples | Notes | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
Rank and file | Corrupted soldiers of the Grande Armee | The uniform survives the transformation; the body does not. One shows both forearms replaced by long curved blades grown from raw flesh | ||
Elite | The Relentless | Volunteers infused with Nephtoglobin on purpose, carrying greatswords and hiding their faces |
Officers | General Lothaire, Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois | Named figures who anchor boss fights |
Abominations | The Orphan | Creatures the plague has pushed past any human shape |
Corrupted villagers are a separate problem. They are civilians the plague reached rather than soldiers, so they sit outside the Guard's chain of command even though they fight William just as readily.
The Eternal Guard is not only a lore label. The studio's own playtest changelog in October 2025 lists a fix that "improved the Eternal Guard's attack selection pattern", which is the clearest first-party sign that the faction is modelled as a coherent enemy type with shared behaviour rather than as loose set dressing. Fighting them is where Catalysts come from, and the parry-and-punish rhythm described on the Combat page is tuned around their attack patterns.
The faction's defining trait in the published material is that the corruption has not broken its discipline. The Relentless are described as endlessly loyal to Napoleon's cause, and the Guard as a whole continues to prosecute an occupation rather than dissolving into a mob. That is what separates it from the villagers, who attack in unpredictable, almost feral bursts with no formation at all, and it is what makes Napoleon a live political figure in the story rather than a distant one.
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, the studio has not given the Guard's size, its command structure below the named officers, or whether any part of it can be reasoned with. Nor has it said whether the faction pre-dates the plague under this name or was renamed after it. The Enemies page collects the individual foes that have been shown.
