Corrupted Villagers

Created Corrupted Villagers page covering their reveal, behaviour, appearance and where they are fought
Corrupted villagers are the civilian victims of the plague in Valor Mortis, and the game's most common non-soldier enemy. They were revealed in the November 2025 "Crimson Plague" gameplay trailer and appear in the later chapter of the 2026 demo.
Where the Eternal Guard is an army that the plague reached, the villagers are the people the army was occupying. The studio describes them as mutated townspeople who wield everyday items like tools, torches and farm equipment, and who attack in unpredictable, almost feral ways that force the player to stay alert and adapt quickly. That is the design contrast the studio draws explicitly: a soldier fights with discipline, a villager does not.
Trait | What the studio has said | |
|---|---|---|
Weapons | Tools, torches and farm equipment rather than military arms | |
Attack style | Unpredictable, almost feral bursts | |
Role | Common enemy rather than elite or boss | |
Where they are fought | The nighttime village level, which is Chapter VII of the [[chapters | chapter]] sequence and the second level of the demo |
The level built around them is designed to reward caution. The studio has said the darkness and narrow layouts make the player feel never truly safe, and that the confined village encourages moving carefully, listening, and using the surroundings to survive rather than charging in.

Production concept art published in July 2026 shows how the villagers were built. They are ordinary townspeople stripped to the waist, in knee breeches and tall worn leather boots, with sheets of violet plague tissue creeping over an arm, a shoulder, a chest or half a face. The sheet lays out lettered rows of alternate heads and alternate bodies side by side, each carrying a different pattern of growth, so a crowd of them does not read as identical. That is a deliberate anti-repetition measure rather than a lore point, and it is worth knowing when you are trying to tell one villager from another mid-fight.
The villagers are not just a new enemy type. The studio has framed the level they occupy as the first time William sees the true horror of what Napoleon's supernatural conquest has done, and as a crisis of conscience for a man who joined the army in good faith. What surfaces there, the fate of the civilians and a local commander's petty vengeance, is presented as a symptom of something deeper rather than an isolated atrocity. Fighting the villagers is therefore also the moment the story turns on the faction William belonged to.
No first-party breakdown of their health, damage or attack timings has been published. What the studio has confirmed about the encounter design is the shape rather than the numbers: they come in groups, they close unpredictably, and the level is built so that sound and sight lines matter more than they do on an open battlefield. The parry-and-punish rhythm on the Combat page is the tool that scales best against them, and the off-hand Fire Transmutation is the studio's own stated answer to grouped foes.
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, the studio has not named individual villager variants, has not said whether any of them can be spared, and has not confirmed whether they appear outside the nighttime village. Sergeant Gaspard "Cannonhand" Dubois and The Relentless were revealed in the same trailer and share the level's setting.
