The Halfmoon is a small, passive, edible fish in Subnautica 2, common in the shallows near the starting area and the most versatile cooking ingredient of the moon family. Eaten raw it restores 15 food but costs 5 water. Catching one for the first time unlocks the recipes for Cooked Halfmoon and Halfmoon Jerky.
Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
Class | Fish |
Disposition | Passive |
Raw nutrition | +15 food, -5 water |
Reported habitat | The Shallows, Coral Gardens, the Graveyard, the Leadzone, Root Canyon, and the Necrolei Hills |
The crescent-shaped body is dark pink with white spotting, bordered in white and dark blue, with the moon family's twin trailing tails. Halfmoons hide in sea whip patches and school with Bluemoons, Harvestmoons, and occasionally a Waxmoon. A chased Halfmoon darts left and right or swims flat along the bottom to shake a pursuer.
Its databank entry, generated under the name Moliform luna, describes a plankton-straining forage fish built for agility, with flow-sensing neuromasts packed along the body and holes in the front fins that let it reverse direction quickly. It also notes a quirk: the Halfmoon cannot distinguish stimuli it causes from changes in the world around it, is easily fascinated by bright light, and sometimes swims sideways as if disoriented.
Safe digestion requires the matching entry in the Adaptations system. The Halfmoon appears in more recipes than any other moon fish:
