The Bluemoon is a small, passive, edible fish in Subnautica 2 and one of the three moon-family fish a new diver meets first. It spawns commonly in the shallows around the starting area, which makes it a reliable early food source before a proper supply chain exists. Eaten raw it restores 10 food and 5 water, the only moon fish that hydrates rather than dehydrates, and cooking keeps that water bonus while raising the food value.

Appearance and Behavior
Like its relatives, the Bluemoon has a crescent-shaped body with a pair of crescent fins and two long, thin tails. The dorsal side is blue, the belly white and orange, and a pair of dark stripes runs down from each eye. Bluemoons hide in patches of sea whips and school together with Halfmoons and Harvestmoons.
The schools sit in the shallow water within swimming distance of the Lifepod and continue east into the North Raceway. They move quickly and turn as a group, so a hand catch usually means cutting a fish off against a sea whip patch rather than chasing it down in open water. A Geordie is the easier target if you only need calories, since it clings to coral; the Bluemoon is worth the extra effort when thirst is the problem.
The Small Moon Fish Compared
All three small moon fish share the same body plan and the same shallow water, but they pull in different directions on the survival bars:
Fish | Raw | Cooked | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
+10 food, +5 water | +25 food, +5 water | The only one that adds water instead of taking it | |
+15 food, -5 water | +25 food | Feeds the most recipes, including jerky and grease | |
+20 food, -5 water | +30 food | The most filling of the three |
Food and Crafting
As with every alien lifeform, safe digestion requires the right entry in the Adaptations system; without it, eating costs health instead of restoring hunger. The Bluemoon feeds two recipes at the Fabricator:
Recipe | Station | Ingredients | Restores |
|---|---|---|---|
Cooked Bluemoon | Fabricator | 1x Bluemoon | +25 food, +5 water |
Threemoon Temaki (x3) | Fabricator | 1x Halfmoon, 1x Harvestmoon, 1x Bluemoon, 1x Fibrous Pulp | +60 food, +15 health |
The Threemoon recipe unlocks only after all three small moon fish have been picked up at least once, and a single craft returns three portions. It gives no water, which is the argument for keeping a few Bluemoon in reserve rather than converting every one of them.
Scanning and Handling
Scanning a Bluemoon fills its databank entry and counts toward the Bioscanner totals that unlock extra passive biomod slots, a system reworked in the 1.1 update. The same update gave most creatures a proper flee reaction when struck with the Survival Multitool. Since the 1.2 update the Feedback Resonator stuns creatures instead of scattering them, which is the cleaner way to work a tight school. See Updates and Patch Notes for the full change history.
