Food in Romestead is both survival fuel and a combat tool. Citizens require food to stay loyal; players require food for buffs before tough fights. Bakery dishes give significant pre-fight boosts, and most prepared foods (since patch 0.20.1_14) carry permanent buff effects rather than just restoring health.

The Bread Chain
Bread is the food that actually sustains a town, and it takes a short production line rather than a single station. Wheat Seeds are planted on Farm Land; harvested Wheat is milled into Flour at a Manual Mill or, once the relevant quest unlocks it, automatically at a Watermill; Flour is then baked by citizens working the Bakery, which burns Coal while it runs.
The quantity matters more than it looks. Before the Bakery is unlocked, Bread can be made directly at the Campfire for 2 Flour a loaf, while the Bakery needs only 1 Flour. Halving the flour cost is the real reason to chase the Bakery unlock, on top of handing the work to citizens instead of doing it by hand.
Hunting is the reliable stopgap before all of that is running. Cooked meat from wildlife comfortably feeds around five citizens, and the same animals drop crafting materials, but it does not scale: a town of ten or more citizens needs agriculture.
Cooked Meat and Fish
Cooked Meat Cut, Raw Meat Cut: small portions.
Cooked Meat Haunch, Raw Meat Haunch: large portions.
Cooked Small Game, Raw Small Game Meat: pigs/mice/rabbits.

Beer: produced in the Beer Dolium.
Wine: produced in the Wine Dolium.
Olive Oil: produced in the Olive Oil Dolium.
Garum: produced in the Garum Dolium.

Citizens and Food
Citizens require Food Storage to be stocked, or they will leave (patch 0.21.1_5 made citizen food gifting heal them to full health). Gluttonous trait citizens consume more food; food costs scale with citizen stats. See Citizens and Artisans.
