The Desert is the mid-game biome of Romestead and the "first big spike in difficulty." Scarce resources, status effects, and tougher enemies make the Desert a noticeable step up from the Forest. It hosts two of the five bosses in the game: Pyzifax and the Cyclops.

Sapphire: appears in desert nodes; primarily a Pyzifax-related material and Mercury-affinity offering.
Tin: feeds Bronze tier and is dropped by Pyzifax.
Iron: veins are rarer in the desert (increase tuned up in patch 0.20.1_14).
Gold and Silver: veins were removed in patch 0.23.1_7 to focus the economy on coins.
Flax: added to the desert in the launch balance pass.
Apricot trees and Palm trees: produce desert fruit; planting fix landed in patch 0.19.2_7.
Grape Paste, Olives: fruit trees here include Apricot and Olive cultivars.
Cursed Bone: dropped by certain Desert enemies (removed from Pyzifax in patch 0.23.3_2).
Desert Satyr: base desert humanoid; can be declared war on via Declaration of War: The Desert Satyrs.
Satyr Brute: heavier melee variant.
Magus: spellcaster variants, including the Magus Ceres Scroll wielder behind the day-one crash hotfix.
Snakes and Scorpions: low-HP harassers (snake HP reduced in patch 0.19.2_4).
Lava Lizards: desert-volcano border patrol (frequency increased in patch 0.23.1_7).
Vultures: day-only aggro.
The Desert holds The Eye, the boss dungeon containing the Cyclops as part of the Virgil's Poem quest. It also hosts a Desert Boss dungeon with a new mechanic that requires the player to light statues before the boss map icon appears (patch 0.19.2). Points of interest unique to the Desert include the Subterranean Lake and several satyr camps.
The Desert hosts two bosses, both worthwhile to repeat:
Pyzifax: 500 HP, banner-themed arena boss. Drops Cape of Pyzifax Banner, Sapphire, Tin Bar, and a random scroll/trinket pool.
Cyclops: 10,000 HP, ten-thousand-hit-point endurance test inside The Eye dungeon. Drops Granite Tooth, Nail of the Cyclops, Cyclops Shard, and the Tectonic armor set.
The Desert is the last standard biome before the Volcanic tip-of-spear. Completing both bosses (and assembling the Tectonic set) is the canonical preparation for pushing into the Volcano.
