Decoration and Furniture
September 21, 2026 at 06:13 AM
Added the Carpenter as a furniture crafter, Early Access furniture variety and stacking, an Appeal and Happiness section, the Autumn Update furniture changes (demolition refunds, more bed types, lootable rugs, search bar, crafting menu fix), the Furniture Mode caveat, and planned additions
Decorating settlements is both a creative outlet and a gameplay mechanic in Romestead. Constructing decorations around a town increases citizen happiness, which matters for keeping a settlement running well. Players who prefer a calmer experience can spend their time decorating rather than adventuring.
Early Access introduced a Decoration Mode, an inventory-free system for collecting, placing, and customizing furniture and decorations. Items range from chairs and tables to lamps, plants, and statues. Removing the need to juggle inventory while decorating is intended to make personalizing a town smoother.
The furniture system was completely overhauled for Early Access, with a clearer interface, smoother controls, and much more placement freedom than the demo offered. This rework accompanied the new Decoration Mode. See Early Access for the full list of launch changes.
The Early Access catalog also grew with furniture such as beds, crates, chairs, and cupboards, available in a number of woods, each with a unique dye and level of grandeur. Some furniture can be placed on top of other furniture; a launch-week hotfix (0.25.1_11, 8 June 2026) fixed cases where that placement failed.
A representative slice of the decoration roster confirmed in the live build:
Category | Items |
|---|---|
Tables | Small Table, Big Table, Log Table, Stone Table, Dark Wood Table |
Seating | Log Chair |
Lighting | Brazier, Campfire, Torch, Ember Orchid Lantern |
Bushes | Small Bush Decoration, Big Bush Decoration, Horizontal Bush Decoration, Vertical Bush Decoration |
Trees | Big Tree Decoration |
Display | Item Stand, Target Dummy |
Music | Drum, Lyre |
Roads | Brick Road Upgrade, Orange Brick Road Upgrade, Stone Road Upgrade, Town Stone Road Upgrade |
Placeable ground | Placeable Dirt, Placeable Grass (Plains / Dry Plains), Placeable Sand (Desert), Placeable Tall Grass |

Furniture and ornaments can be crafted. The Carpenter crafts furniture, roads, and constructions, and is also the building used to upgrade other buildings. The Sculptor, a building added in Early Access, lets players craft stone furniture and ornaments. Decorations therefore tie into the settlement and crafting systems. See Settlements and Buildings for the Sculptor and other production buildings. Raising a god's Worship Level unlocks decorations as well as new buildings and upgrades.
Increase citizen happiness, which improves work efficiency and expertise.
Personalize settlements using chairs, tables, lamps, plants, statues, and more.
Use the inventory-free Decoration Mode for placement and customization.
Craft stone furniture and ornaments at the Sculptor.
Place ground tiles to shape the look of your town center.
Decorations do not hand happiness to citizens directly. They raise the appeal of the building they surround, and appeal is what feeds citizen happiness, which in turn drives work efficiency and expertise. The studio's framing since its October 2025 devlog has been that citizens work better with a full belly and decorations around them. The Autumn Update (0.26.1, released 31 August 2026) corrected one decoration that had been giving happiness to citizens directly instead of raising building appeal. See Citizens and Artisans for the happiness stat itself.
Version 0.26.1 folded the summer beta branch into the default game and brought the first post-launch furniture changes:
Demolishing decorations now returns their materials, and demolishing an upgraded building returns the materials of its previous tiers as well.
Players can sleep in more types of beds.
Some rug furniture found out in the world could not be looted; this was fixed.
The furniture search bar is no longer case sensitive.
A crash in the furniture crafting menu was fixed.
Ahead of the update the studio said it would remove the Press R to toggle Furniture Mode step for picking items back up, replacing it with a press and hold of the interact key on the workbench, barricades, and other furniture. The published 0.26.1 change log does not list that removal, and the later patch notes still refer to a Furniture mode: 0.26.1_4 fixed its shift button and 0.26.1_5 made movement in the Construction, Logistics, and Furniture modes re-bindable on PC. Treat the toggle's removal as announced rather than confirmed until a patch note lists it. See Controls and Keybinds.
Asked in the June 2026 roadmap questions whether boss loot chests could be placed as decorative or functional containers inside a settlement, the studio answered that it is something it wants to add. As of 21 September 2026, no patch note through 0.26.1_6 and no studio update lists it. The store's Early Access statement also lists more decorations among the content the studio plans to introduce.
