Initial comprehensive overview article
Pokemon Pokopia is a life simulation game released exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026. Co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force division, the game puts players in control of a Ditto that has transformed into a human. After waking from a long slumber in a world where humans have vanished and the land has withered, the player sets out to rebuild the environment into a thriving Pokemon utopia by gathering materials, crafting items, building structures, and befriending Pokemon.
Published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, Pokopia was first announced at a Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025, and launched worldwide simultaneously. The game received critical acclaim, earning an 89 on Metacritic, the highest score for any Pokemon game on the platform at launch.
The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Kanto. Humans once lived alongside Pokemon, but severe weather disturbances forced humanity to initiate a "Pokemon Conservation Project." All Pokemon were placed into a massive computer storage system, while humans took refuge in space. When the player's Ditto wakes from its long sleep, it discovers the world has withered in their absence. Only Professor Tangrowth, a white-vined Tangrowth with broken glasses, remains.
The Ditto chose to transform into the shape of its lost trainer and sets out to restore the desolate land. By crafting, building habitats, and attracting Pokemon back to the world, the player gradually uncovers the mystery of humanity's disappearance. The narrative unfolds over 25 to 50 hours depending on playstyle, with story progression gating access to new areas.
Pokopia combines sandbox building with life simulation. The core loop involves gathering materials through Ditto's transform abilities (learned from befriended Pokemon), crafting items at workbenches, building homes and habitats, and attracting new Pokemon to the rebuilt world. As the Environment Level rises through habitat improvements and Pokemon comfort, new recipes, building kits, and rare Pokemon become available.
The game features a real-time day/night cycle synced to the Switch 2's internal clock, with four distinct periods (Morning, Daytime, Evening, Nighttime). A dynamic weather system allows players to trigger rain or sunshine through crafted weather sites. Some Pokemon only appear during specific times of day or weather conditions.
Players progress through four story areas: Withered Wasteland, Bleak Beach, Rocky Ridges, and Sparkling Skylands. A fifth sandbox zone, Palette Town, is available for freeform building and multiplayer. To see credits, players must rebuild the Pokemon Center in each of the four story areas.
Pokopia supports up to four players through multiplayer modes including direct visits to friends' islands, persistent Cloud Islands accessible when the host is offline, and GameShare for playing with someone who does not own the game. Multiplayer activities include collaborative building, resource sharing, and hide-and-seek using the Camouflage ability.
The concept for Pokopia originated with Shigeru Ohmori of Game Freak, who was inspired by his earliest work as a map designer on Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. He recalled that "the feeling of Pokemon appearing when I was creating the habitat was very interesting" and wanted to build an entire game around that concept. Game Freak lacked experience in the sandbox genre, so The Pokemon Company recommended partnering with Omega Force, whose team included veterans of Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Takuto Edagawa of Omega Force served as Chief Director, while Marina Ayano handled art direction with a focus on keywords like "chill" and "pop." Omega Force assembled the largest development team in the division's history for the project. Kanako Murata of The Pokemon Company served as Producer.

The name "Pokopia" is a portmanteau combining multiple references: "poco a poco" (Spanish/Italian for "little by little"), "Pokemon," "copy" (referring to Ditto's Transform ability), and "utopia" (the paradise the player builds). The Japanese title is "Poco a Pokemon" (also abbreviated as "PokoPoke").
