Locked Gates and Future Content

Added June 2026 announcement update covering the Expansion Pass and free Version 2.0
As of Version 1.0.4 (released April 22, 2026), Pokemon Pokopia contains two area gates that cannot be opened through normal gameplay. These gates, combined with an in-game reference to the Sevii Islands, have fueled community speculation about potential DLC expansions.
Two gates remain inaccessible:

Location | Position | In-Game Message |
|---|---|---|
North end of the area | "Something on the other side is obstructing the entrance for safety." | |
East side of the area | "Something on the other side is obstructing the entrance for safety." |
Both gates display the same message when interacted with. No combination of Trainer Rank, Pokedex completion, or story progression unlocks them. Their existence suggests that the developers may have planned additional regions accessible through these entry points.
An in-game note specifically mentions the Sevii Islands as "a hot-spot for rare Pokemon encounters." The islands are referenced in Pokopia only through this note and have no in-game gateway in the current build.
The note's presence is notable because Pokopia otherwise only references locations within the Kanto region proper. The Sevii Islands would be a natural fit for DLC content, as they could be accessed via the existing locked gates and would expand the game's island-building formula to new environments.
As of May 2026, Nintendo and Game Freak have not officially announced any DLC or expansion pass for Pokemon Pokopia. The game does not have a Season Pass or any confirmed post-launch content roadmap beyond bug fixes and limited-time events. However, the game's strong commercial and critical performance (2.2 million copies sold in the first four days) makes additional content development plausible.
In addition to the two locked gates, there is a separate hidden gate in Sparkling Skylands that requires a completed Pokedex to open. This leads to the Pokedex Completion Room, a small chamber with exclusive recipes and a diploma. This gate is unrelated to the potential DLC gates.
Location | Region | Description |
|---|---|---|
Western Gate | A sealed gate at the western edge of the map. Interacting with it displays: "The gate is firmly sealed. It seems like it leads somewhere far away." | |
Northern Passage | A blocked passage at the northern boundary. A faded sign nearby reads "Sevii Islands" but the path is impassable. |
The community has developed several theories about what lies behind the locked gates. These are unconfirmed speculation and should not be taken as confirmed content:
Lavender Town DLC: The most popular theory. Lavender Town's Pokemon Tower is iconic in Kanto lore and would fit Pokopia's ghost-themed content. Dataminers have reportedly found references to "tower" assets not used in the current game.
Sevii Islands Expansion: The Sevii Islands sign in Sparkling Skylands strongly suggests a future expansion featuring these island chains, which are referenced in the in-game magazine but otherwise unreachable in the current build.
Indigo Plateau: Some fans speculate the western gate leads to the Indigo Plateau area, potentially adding a competitive or challenge mode.
As of May 2026, neither Game Freak, The Pokemon Company, nor Nintendo have officially confirmed any DLC or expansion packs for Pokemon Pokopia. When asked about post-launch content, the development team has stated that they are "focused on improving the base game experience" through patches and limited-time events.
The presence of locked gates and unused references does not guarantee future content. Previous Pokemon titles have included similar inaccessible areas that were never expanded upon.
The speculation on this page partly resolved on June 9, 2026: the Expansion Pass confirmed paid post-launch content in three parts, starting with the underwater town Bubbly Basin in August 2026 and ending with another new town in 2027 that has not been named. The free Version 2.0 update adds the move Dive in August 2026. None of the announcements mention the Sevii Islands, so that hint remains open.
