Fossils and Museum
March 7, 2026 at 05:46 PM
Add all 9 fossil Pokemon (was 4), full 22 fossil piece list, habitat numbers #193-201, Gimmighoul Collect specialty details (Lost Relic + Rainbow Feather/Silver Wing trades), Dowsing Machine mechanics, fossil Pokemon are recruitable (not just decorative), expanded Lost Relics comparison
Fossils are a collectible category in Pokemon Pokopia separate from Lost Relics. There are 22 fossil pieces to discover across all five regions, representing parts of 9 fossil Pokemon. Fossils are displayed at the Museum in Rocky Ridges, which is operated by a Gimmighoul in a chest. Assembling complete fossil sets on Pedestals creates fossil display habitats that bring fossil Pokemon to life as recruitable Pokemon, not just decorative displays.
Fossils are found in Buried Treasure blocks, which appear as blocks with golden light shining out of them. Use Rock Smash to break them open. Fossils are not found at fixed locations; the drops from treasure blocks are random. Buried Treasure blocks refresh each day, so you can return to the same areas daily for new chances.
Fossils can be found on all five islands: Withered Wasteland, Bleak Beach, Rocky Ridges, Sparkling Skylands, and Palette Town. They are not region-specific, so any fossil piece can drop from any treasure block on any island.
The Dowsing Machine is the most reliable way to locate Buried Treasure blocks. It is obtained by completing Hitmonchan's request "Check What's Up There" in Withered Wasteland. Hitmonchan directs you up a damaged path that requires dirt blocks for climbing. At the summit, break the blocks surrounding a glowing Poke Ball to receive the Dowsing Machine.
To use the Dowsing Machine:
Equip the Dowsing Machine from your inventory.
Have a Pokemon with the Search specialty following you.
Press and hold A. A beeping noise will play.
The beeping accelerates as you get closer to a buried item.
Use Rock Smash to excavate the glowing blocks.
The Dowsing Machine is a permanent, reusable tool. It can find fossils, Lost Relics, Mystery Slates, CDs (for DJ Rotom), and Dolls (for Dream Island transport).
You need a Pokemon with the Search specialty following you to activate the Dowsing Machine. Some of the commonly used Search Pokemon include:
Pokemon | Notes |
|---|---|
Eeveelution, available from Palette Town | |
Vespiquen | Available in multiple regions |
Arcanine | Evolved form of Growlithe |
Excadrill | Ground-type digger, thematic fit for fossil hunting |
Crobat | Evolved form of Golbat/Zubat |
Golduck | Water-type, available from Bleak Beach area |
Noivern | Available in later areas |
There are 27 Pokemon with the Search specialty in total. Bring one whenever you are actively hunting for fossils.
The Museum is a building in Rocky Ridges, buried deep in the mountain. To find it, follow the train tracks into the mines from the Pokemon Center area. Break rocks to the right of the Pokemon Center (near where DJ Rotom is found) and follow the track to the ruins of the Museum. The building is thematically based on Pewter City's Museum from the classic Pokemon games.
The Museum has pre-placed Pedestals (Exhibition Stands) already set up when you discover it. Bring your collected fossil pieces here and place them on the Pedestals to assemble fossil display habitats.
The Museum is operated by Gimmighoul (Chest Form), the only Pokemon in Pokopia with the Collect specialty. Gimmighoul trades appraised Lost Relics for pieces of furniture. It also accepts special items for exclusive rewards:
Item Traded | Reward |
|---|---|
Appraised Lost Relics | Various furniture items |
Rainbow Feather (from Ho-Oh) | Pop art table |
Silver Wing (from Lugia) | Pop art sofa |
The Collect specialty is separate from fossil assembly. Gimmighoul handles the trading side of the Museum, while the Pedestals handle fossil display construction.
There are 22 fossil pieces in total, spread across 9 fossil types. Some fossil Pokemon require only a single piece, while larger ones require 3 to 5 pieces:
Fossil Type | Pieces | Individual Parts |
|---|---|---|
Wing Fossil (Aerodactyl) | 5 | Head, Body, Tail, Left Wing, Right Wing |
Headbutt Fossil (Rampardos) | 3 | Head, Body, Tail |
Shield Fossil (Bastiodon) | 3 | Head, Body, Tail |
Despot Fossil (Tyrantrum) | 4 | Head, Body, Tail, Legs |
Tundra Fossil (Aurorus) | 3 | Head, Body, Tail |
Skull Fossil (Cranidos) | 1 | Single piece |
Armor Fossil (Shieldon) | 1 | Single piece |
Jaw Fossil (Tyrunt) | 1 | Single piece |
Sail Fossil (Amaura) | 1 | Single piece |
Each fossil type corresponds to a fossil display habitat in the Habitat Dex. Assembling the fossil pieces on Pedestals creates the habitat, which causes the corresponding fossil Pokemon to spawn. These are real, recruitable Pokemon that can be befriended and will use their specialties in your settlement, not just static decorations.
Habitat # | Display Name | Pokemon | Pedestals Required |
|---|---|---|---|
#193 | Wing Fossil Display | Aerodactyl | 1 |
#194 | Skull Fossil Display | Cranidos | 1 |
#195 | Headbutt Fossil Display | Rampardos | 1 |
#196 | Armor Fossil Display | Shieldon | 1 |
#197 | Shield Fossil Display | Bastiodon | 2 |
#198 | Jaw Fossil Display | Tyrunt | 1 |
#199 | Despot Fossil Display | Tyrantrum | 2 |
#200 | Sail Fossil Display | Amaura | 1 |
#201 | Tundra Fossil Display | Aurorus | 1 |
Pedestals must be placed adjacent to each other for multi-Pedestal displays (Bastiodon requires 2, Tyrantrum requires 2). Once a fossil Pokemon's display is fully assembled, the Pokemon begins appearing at the habitat with Common rarity across all times of day and weather conditions.
Fossils and Lost Relics are found in similar locations (glowing ground spots via Rock Smash) but serve very different purposes:
Aspect | Fossils | Lost Relics |
|---|---|---|
Purpose | Build fossil display habitats to recruit prehistoric Pokemon | Decorative items, crafting recipe unlocks, furniture |
Total Count | 22 pieces (9 types) | 83+ items (Small and Large sizes) |
Appraisal | No appraisal needed; placed directly on Pedestals | Must be appraised by Professor Tangrowth to identify |
After Use | Creates habitats that spawn recruitable Pokemon | Becomes permanent collectible; some attract specific Pokemon to habitats |
Trading | Duplicate fossils can be sold (~1,000 points each) | Can be traded to Gimmighoul (Collect specialty) for furniture |
Special Handling | None | Some may detonate; use Water Gun to defuse before excavating |
Small Lost Relics are typically items from past Pokemon games (like Miracle Seed, Choice Band) that can be framed and displayed. Large Lost Relics are furniture items themed after Pokemon (Avalugg Table, Pikachu Sofa, Horsea Fountain, etc.).
Always bring a Search specialty Pokemon when fossil hunting. The Dowsing Machine dramatically increases your find rate.
Buried Treasure blocks respawn daily. Visit each region's mining areas once per day for consistent fossil progress.
Fossils are random drops, not region-specific. You may find duplicates before completing the full set. Sell duplicates at the Pokemon Center for approximately 1,000 points each.
The Museum in Rocky Ridges has pre-placed Pedestals. You do not need to craft them for the initial displays.
Completing all 9 fossil display habitats fills Habitat Dex entries #193 through #201.
Fossil Pokemon are real, recruitable Pokemon with specialties. They are not just decorations. Build their habitats to add them to your Pokedex.
Bring special items like Rainbow Feathers and Silver Wings to Gimmighoul for exclusive pop art furniture.
Some Lost Relic spots may detonate. Use Water Gun first to prevent the relic from breaking.
Expect to spend several real-time days to collect all 22 fossil pieces due to the random drop system.
