Overview
Phantom Blade Zero's combat is built around S-GAME's proprietary Combo Chain system, which chains attacks through two primary buttons: Square (light attack) and Triangle (heavy/Sha-Chi attack). The system rewards players who memorize input patterns and react to enemy openings, with weapon switching and Power Surges layered on top of the basic framework.
Basic combos
Repeated Square presses produce a four-hit light combo sequence. These attacks are fast, cost no resources, and are the bread-and-butter of moment-to-moment combat. Each primary weapon has its own unique light combo animations and hit properties, so switching from Sanguine to Jagged Steel changes the feel and timing of even these basic strings.
Sha-Chi combos
Mixing Triangle presses into the chain accesses Sha-Chi combos, which deal more damage at the cost of the Sha-Chi resource pool. Specific patterns produce distinct attacks:
Triangle-Triangle: a two-hit heavy sequence
Square-Triangle-Triangle: launches into a powerful finisher after a light opener
Square-Square-Triangle-Triangle: extends the combo with two light hits before the heavy finisher
Learning which patterns to use in different situations is the core of the combo system's depth. Against enemies with high poise, heavy Triangle inputs stagger more effectively. Against groups, light Square chains with wide sweeps are safer.
Weapon switching mid-combo
Players can equip two primary weapons and swap between them via Left D-Pad at any point during a combo. This extends attack strings into longer sequences that flow between two fighting styles. There is a major strategic incentive: weapon switching fully recovers the Sha-Chi pool. This means aggressive players who swap weapons mid-fight sustain their offense longer than those who stick to a single weapon, and it makes weapon selection a tactical choice rather than a cosmetic one.
Phantom Edge integration
Phantom Edges (secondary weapons activated via R2) can be woven into combos for ranged attacks, crowd control, or burst damage. Players equip two Phantom Edges and switch between them with Right D-Pad. Pressing R2 mid-combo fires the active Phantom Edge without breaking the attack chain, letting players extend their reach against retreating enemies or add a ranged hit between melee strings.
Power Surge
Each primary weapon has a Power Surge, an ultimate ability that costs one Sha-Chi Essence point. Sha-Chi Essence accumulates through normal attacks, successful parries, and Ghost Steps. Power Surges land direct hits regardless of the opponent's current defense state, making them the combo system's highest-impact moves. Timing a Power Surge at the end of a long combo chain deals maximum damage.
Group combat
The combo system emphasizes group combat over single-target focus. Players can deflect and dodge from all directions, chaining combos across multiple enemies in a single flow. Stealth kills can also chain together with "double stealth kill" opportunities. The design philosophy, according to S-GAME, is that the player should look and feel like a wuxia film protagonist cutting through groups of opponents in one continuous sequence.
Accessibility and depth
Creative director Soulframe Liang has positioned the game alongside Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry but emphasized two distinctions: accessibility and cinematic presentation. The fantasy, as Liang described it, is "I look incredible doing this" rather than pure survival difficulty. The combo system reflects this: basic combos are easy to execute, while the deep Sha-Chi patterns, weapon switching, and Phantom Edge integration reward players who invest time in mastering the system.
