Critical Reception
September 14, 2026 at 12:57 AM
Tightened the opening line
Reviews for Marvel's Wolverine went live on September 10, 2026, five days ahead of the September 15 release. This page records where the aggregate picture settled and what reviewers agreed on.
By September 13, 2026, the two widely used review aggregators both placed the game in the high seventies out of one hundred. One carried a weighted score of 78 drawn from 113 critic reviews, with roughly three quarters of those reviews positive and none negative. The other carried a top critic average of 79 across 72 reviews, with 72 per cent of critics recommending it and a tier label of Strong. Individual scores ranged from full marks down to the equivalent of five out of ten.
The figures moved during the first days after the embargo. On September 10 the same two aggregates read 81 and 77; as the sample grew they converged on 79 and 78. Any figure quoted from embargo day is a snapshot of a much smaller set of reviews, which is worth knowing if you see one repeated.
Theme | Detail |
|---|---|
Combat | The claw work, dismemberment and the parry and dodge loop feeding Rage and the healing factor were the near-universal high point |
Presentation | Character models, facial animation and performance capture were repeatedly singled out, including progressive damage to Logan's clothes and skin |
Performances | Liam McIntyre as Logan and Troy Baker as Nathaniel Essex drew particular praise |
Variety of place | The globe-trotting structure across Canada, Japan and Madripoor was seen as one of the game's strengths |
Theme | Detail |
|---|---|
Story cohesion | The most common complaint. Several reviewers felt the second half sets up a sequel rather than resolving its own arcs |
Restriction | Invisible walls, forced walking sections and on-rails set pieces were repeatedly flagged against the linear structure |
Combat depth | Reviewers who liked the opening hours often felt the system stops opening up, with limited enemy variety and heavy enemies that absorb too much damage |
Scale | The game was widely judged smaller in scope than recent first-party output, and that comparison was the most common frame used against it |
Hand-holding | Tutorial prompts, companion hint lines and the objective trail drew criticism as dated |
The objective trail was the single most argued-about feature of the launch window. Insomniac's own explanation of it, given by game director Mike Daly, is that it is the classic objective trail actualised in game as Wolverine catching a scent, and the game plays that straight in cutscenes. See Combat and Enhanced Senses.
Reviewers did not agree on a single figure, and the spread is wide enough that it is worth reporting as a range rather than a number. Insomniac has never published a playtime estimate of its own.
Play style | Reported range |
|---|---|
Main story, brisk | Around 12 hours |
Main story, typical | Roughly 15 to 20 hours |
Story plus optional content | Around 20 to 25 hours |
Full trophy completion | Reported at over 20 hours, including mission replays and Nightmare Doors trials |
The variables that move the figure are the difficulty settings, how much of the optional content you clear, and whether you chase the Platinum, which requires every collectible set and an Adamantium placing on a Nightmare Trial. See Collectibles and Progression and Upgrades.
This page records the reception of this game only. Comparisons that reviewers drew to the studio's other Marvel games are reported as reviewer framing rather than as facts about Marvel's Wolverine, and no mechanic, district or system from those games is documented anywhere on this wiki as Wolverine content.
