Onimusha: Way of the Sword structures its campaign around named boss encounters rather than around a difficulty curve of ordinary enemies. Community documentation of the shipped game catalogues fourteen boss entries, several of which are fought more than once, and the game funnels the last stretch of the story into a floor-by-floor rush through a castle that revisits earlier opponents in sequence.
Every boss uses the same response language as normal combat: drain the stamina gauge with parries and deflects until the opponent is exhausted, then open them up with a Break Issen. Against bosses the Break Issen adds a targeting step, letting the player choose which body part to strike. Different parts pay out differently, so the choice is made against the current state of the fight rather than by rote.
Boss Roster
The table below lists the boss encounters documented in the shipped game. Capcom's own pre-release material named only part of this roster, so entries without an official English name are given under the reading used in community documentation.
Boss | Encounters | Where Fought |
|---|---|---|
Three separate fights across the campaign | Kiyomizu-dera Temple and later locations | |
One, with two forms | The Oni hidden village, reached through the Oni Refuge | |
One, with two forms | Eastern Kyoto | |
Recurring, at five separate locations and from Rift spawns | Eastern Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera, Mount Oe, Arashiyama, the castle | |
One solo fight, plus a tag fight alongside his brother | Eastern Kyoto | |
Nue | One solo fight, later refought as a paired encounter | Nijo Castle |
One, with two forms | The Kyoto Imperial Palace | |
Recurring across several locations | Eastern Kyoto, Mount Oe, Arashiyama, the castle | |
Benkei | Two fights | The bridge district of Eastern Kyoto |
One solo fight, plus the tag fight with Ifuu | Eastern Kyoto | |
One, with two forms and a checkpoint between them | Mount Oe | |
One, with two forms | Arashiyama | |
Final opponent | One, with three forms | The top floor of the castle |
Recurring Versus One-Off Bosses
Three opponents are built to reappear rather than to be beaten once. Byakue and Dohatsu-ten both turn up at multiple locations and can also emerge from Rifts, which makes them closer to elite enemies than to story bosses. Sasaki Ganryu sits between the two categories: he is fought three times as a story beat, and each fight changes his moveset rather than simply raising his numbers.
That structure matters for how the game teaches. An opponent met early and met again later is the game's way of measuring the player against their own earlier self, and the second Sasaki Ganryu fight is widely described as the easier of the three because he arrives with a single health gauge.
The Endgame Castle
The final stretch is a boss rush. After speaking to Ono no Takamura at Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple, Eastern Kyoto becomes permanently inaccessible, so every side activity has to be finished before that conversation. What follows is a five-floor ascent of a castle, each floor holding a previously met opponent, ending with the final fight in the keep.
Floor | Opponent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
First | Daidara | A straight rematch |
Second | Byakue | Spawns from a Rift, with corrosive Malice damaging the arena |
Third | Two Nue at once | Both are present simultaneously |
Fourth | Greater Nue | Healing pickups grow in the arena for mid-fight refills |
Fifth | Dohatsu-ten | Preceded by a wave of enemies from a Rift |
Keep | The final opponent | Three forms, fought back to back |
The final fight has a hard gate rather than a difficulty spike: its third form takes no damage at all unless Musashi is in the fully awakened Oni Awakened state. The awakening gauge therefore has to be banked before the transition, and a player who spends it during the second form is sent back to the start of the sequence.
The Identity of the Final Opponent
The castle in which the final fight takes place is named in-game after a historical figure's childhood name, and community guides identify the final opponent accordingly. No official Capcom material published as of mid-September 2026 names him, and the achievements covering the closing chapters are all description-hidden, so the identification rests on community documentation rather than on first-party confirmation. It is recorded here on that footing.
Rematches
Every boss fought during the story can be challenged again at the practice ground once it unlocks. Rematches are selected at a chosen difficulty, and clearing the full roster at a given difficulty awards a cosmetic sword appearance. Because rewards for the higher tier supersede the lower, there is no need to clear the same set twice.
