Death is a permanent (but not irreversible) event in inZOI. When a Zoi dies, they either move to the afterlife or become a Ghost depending on their Karma level. Eight death types have been confirmed in the current Early Access version. Children cannot die; they are sent to the Child Protection Agency when their needs reach critical levels.
All Death Types
Death Type | Cause | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
Starvation | No food for 3 to 4 in-game days | Feed Zoi from refrigerator, food stands, or restaurants |
Sleep Deprivation | Continuous neglect of the Sleep need | Allow adequate rest in a bed or on a sofa |
Fire | Kitchen accidents or broken appliances | Maintain appliances regularly; supervise cooking Zois |
Falling | Slippery surfaces such as wet floors | Fix broken faucets promptly; dry wet areas |
Electrocution | Hacking ATMs or fixing broken electronics | Avoid ATM hacking; level up Housework Skill before repairs |
Car Accident | Collision with other vehicles while driving | Drive carefully; avoid high-speed areas |
Old Age | Natural death at the Senior life stage | Cannot be prevented (inevitable) |
Running Away | Critical Recognition need depletion | Maintain the Recognition need gauge |
Starvation
The most common preventable death. If the Hunger Need drops to zero and remains there for 3 to 4 in-game days, the Zoi dies from malnutrition. The need gauge turns red well before death, giving players ample warning. Feed your Zoi using the refrigerator, ordering food from the Pocket Market, or visiting restaurants.
Fire
Kitchen fires can break out when cooking goes wrong or when appliances malfunction due to lack of maintenance. When a Fire starts, nearby Zois may panic. Prevention involves regular appliance maintenance (improved by the Housework Skill) and supervising less-skilled cooks. The Firefighter Career exists as a thematic counterpart to fire-related dangers.
Electrocution
Zois can be electrocuted when attempting to hack ATMs (a Crime action requiring bad Karma) or when repairing broken electronic devices at home. Higher Housework Skill levels reduce the risk of electrocution during repairs.
Old Age
The only inevitable death type. Zois who reach the Senior stage will eventually pass away from natural causes. Players can delay this by turning off aging in simulation settings, but once aging is active, Senior Zois face an increasing probability of natural death each day.
What Happens After Death
When a Zoi dies, the outcome depends on their Karma level:
Good Karma: The Zoi passes peacefully to the afterlife
Bad Karma: The Zoi becomes a Ghost and must redeem their Karma over 3 in-game days
Players also have the option to "Go Back In Time," which loads a previous save to undo the death. The Insurance system provides financial compensation for certain death types.
Child Safety
Children and younger Zois cannot die. If a child's needs reach critical levels, they are removed from the household by the Child Protection Agency instead. This prevents accidental child deaths but means the child is lost from the family.
