Car Theft is a crime mechanic introduced in the March 2026 Update (v0.7.0) that allows Zois to steal parked vehicles throughout the city. The feature expands the existing crime system by adding a high-stakes criminal action with real consequences, including arrest, a trial, and potential jail time. Vehicle theft is classified as a serious offense that significantly affects a Zoi's Crime Score and Karma.
The community quickly nicknamed the v0.7.0 patch the "GTA 6 Update" because it shipped car theft mechanics in a life simulation game before the actual Grand Theft Auto VI had released.
Stealing a car follows a multi-step process that depends on your Zoi's Crime Skill level:
Locate a vehicle. Open the city map and look for red dots, which indicate parked vehicles. This map overlay was added alongside the car theft feature.
Approach the vehicle. Walk up to any parked car on the street. Not every vehicle is eligible for theft; only certain cars can be targeted.
Attempt the break-in. Initiate the theft interaction. The game calculates a success rate based on your Zoi's Crime Skill level.
Success or failure. A successful attempt lets your Zoi drive the stolen car freely. A failed attempt triggers the car alarm, drawing attention from nearby Zois and potentially alerting police.
Once inside, a stolen vehicle handles identically to any car your Zoi owns. You can drive it across the city and park it anywhere. For general vehicle controls, see Driving and Vehicles.
There is no strict Crime Skill level requirement to attempt a theft, but the success rate scales directly with your Zoi's Crime Skill. The Crime Skill caps at Level 5 and improves through repeated criminal actions such as scams, theft, extortion, and break-ins.
Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
Crime Skill level | Higher levels increase the chance of a clean break-in |
Failed attempt | Triggers the car alarm, attracting attention |
Witnesses present | Nearby Zois who see the theft may report it to police |
Police proximity | Officers in the area can arrest the Zoi immediately |
Vehicle theft carries a full chain of legal consequences that mirror the existing justice system:
Witnesses and detection: Other Zois in the area can witness a theft in progress and report it. Failed attempts with car alarms draw attention from everyone nearby.
Arrest: Police can catch the Zoi at the scene, or a witness report leads to a later arrest.
Travel restriction: Zois scheduled for trial cannot travel to other cities. This restriction was added in v0.7.0 to prevent fleeing jurisdiction.
Trial: A trial date is set after arrest. During the trial, opportunity cards appear; correct responses can reduce the sentence. Hiring a lawyer improves the odds.
Prison: A guilty verdict results in approximately 24 in-game hours of jail time. Jail is a playable space with basic amenities. See Prison and Jail.
Crime Score: Vehicle theft adds a significant amount to the Zoi's Crime Score, increasing future police attention.
Car theft is not exclusive to player-controlled Zois. NPCs may also steal the player's parked car if it is left unattended in public areas. This adds an element of risk to parking your vehicle in high-traffic or high-crime neighborhoods. Keep your car in a garage or private lot to minimize the chance of NPC theft.
Car theft is part of a broader crime overhaul in the v0.7.0 update. The same patch adjusted several other criminal mechanics:
Change | Details |
|---|---|
Crop theft reclassification | Stealing crops from other Zois now counts as theft |
Extortion rebalancing | Rewards and success rate of the Extort interaction adjusted |
Reduced misdemeanor arrests | Chances of arrest for minor offenses lowered |
The crime system was originally introduced in v0.5.0 (December 2025). For a full breakdown of all criminal activities, see the Crime article.
Level up Crime Skill first. Build your Crime Skill through lower-risk activities like stealing coins or running scams before attempting vehicle theft.
Check for witnesses. Before initiating a break-in, make sure no other Zois are nearby. Witnesses are the most common reason thieves get caught.
Use the map markers. Red dots on the city map show every available vehicle. Look for cars in quieter areas with less foot traffic.
Have bail money ready. Keep enough Meow on hand to post bail after an arrest so your Zoi stays free while awaiting trial.
Do not flee. As of v0.7.0, Zois scheduled for trial cannot travel to other cities. Prepare for the trial instead by hiring a lawyer.
Watch for NPC thieves. Park your own car in a garage or private area to prevent NPCs from stealing it.
