Expanded with MOBA rework details, Daoist philosophy lore, protective abilities, team composition, and tips
Zhuangzi (also known as Zhuang Zhou) is a Tank/Protector hero in Honor of Kings: World. He has been completely reworked from his Support classification in the original Honor of Kings MOBA into a survival-focused tank with serious protective capabilities. Zhuangzi is designed to keep entire teams alive through area shields, sustained healing, and crowd control immunity.
The rework from Support to Tank is one of the most dramatic role changes in the transition from MOBA to RPG. In the original MOBA, Zhuangzi was a Support who removed crowd control effects from allies. For Honor of Kings: World, TiMi Studio Group rebuilt his kit from the ground up to fit the action RPG format. He now fills a dedicated tank role with enhanced damage resistance, massive area shields, and the ability to protect teammates from lethal burst damage during boss encounters.
Zhuangzi's playstyle centers on protecting his team rather than dealing damage. His abilities create safe zones and cleanse harmful effects, making him invaluable in dungeons and raids where bosses inflict heavy crowd control. Unlike Kai, who absorbs damage personally through parries, Zhuangzi extends his protection to the entire party simultaneously.
His damage output is the lowest of any tank, but his protective value is unmatched. A single well-timed Dream Domain ultimate can save an entire raid team from a wipe. Players who choose Zhuangzi commit fully to the defensive support role, and their contribution is measured in deaths prevented rather than damage dealt.
Butterfly Shield: deploys a large protective barrier that shields all nearby allies, absorbing a set amount of damage before breaking. The shield scales with Zhuangzi's maximum HP, rewarding a tanky equipment build. Multiple shields can overlap for layered protection.
Healing Mist: releases a field of restorative energy that provides continuous healing to allies within its area. This sustained recovery helps the team endure prolonged boss encounters without relying entirely on a dedicated Support hero.
Dream Walk: Zhuangzi enters a dreamlike state, becoming immune to crowd control and gaining increased movement speed for a short duration. During Dream Walk, nearby allies also receive reduced crowd control duration.
Dream Domain (Ultimate): creates a dream-infused protective field centered on Zhuangzi. All allies within the domain receive immediate crowd control removal, immunity to future control effects for the duration, and a powerful shield. This ultimate is a direct counter to bosses that chain crowd control abilities.
Zhuangzi is based on the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zhou (c. 369 to 286 BCE), one of the foundational figures of Daoism (Taoism). He is best known for the "Butterfly Dream" parable: one night Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, fluttering happily about. Upon waking, he could not determine whether he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamed of being a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming of being Zhuang Zhou.
This philosophical theme of blurred boundaries between dreams and reality permeates Zhuangzi's design in Honor of Kings: World. His protective abilities are literally dream-based, with Butterfly Shield and Dream Domain drawing visual inspiration from the butterfly parable. The dreamlike visual effects on his abilities reinforce the idea that protection comes through transcending the ordinary perception of reality.
Beyond the Butterfly Dream, Zhuangzi's philosophy emphasized naturalness, spontaneity, and freedom from conventional constraints. His Daoist teachings influenced Chinese culture for millennia. In Primaera's narrative, Zhuangzi serves as a guide character who appears at key story moments to point the Flowborn protagonist toward truth and wisdom. He questions the nature of reality, dreams, and the Flow itself, adding philosophical depth to the game's lore.
Zhuangzi and Kai are both tanks, but they serve very different functions. Kai is a personal tank who absorbs damage through parries and converts it into counter-attacks. He is mechanically demanding and rewards individual skill. Zhuangzi is a group protector who shields the entire team simultaneously. He is less mechanically demanding but requires strong awareness of team positioning and boss attack patterns.
In raid compositions, teams often bring both: Kai as the main tank holding boss aggro and Zhuangzi as the off-tank providing party-wide protection during dangerous phases. Their kits complement each other well, with Kai handling focused burst damage and Zhuangzi covering area-wide threats.
Save Dream Domain for boss phases with heavy crowd control. Timing it to coincide with a dangerous mechanic lets your team deal damage safely.
Build Zhuangzi with HP-focused gear to maximize shield strength. Butterfly Shield scales directly with maximum HP.
Communicate with your team about when you plan to activate Dream Domain so damage dealers can commit fully during the immunity window.
Zhuangzi pairs exceptionally well with Cai Wenji for a double layer of healing and protection. This combination makes the team extremely durable.
Healing Mist and Butterfly Shield can be active simultaneously. Layer them during high-damage phases for maximum survivability.
In solo play, Zhuangzi's shields apply to yourself and AI companions. His survivability makes him a safe choice for exploring difficult content.
