Initial Valley of Mines article (2026-04-22)
The Valley of Mines, often simply called the Colony, is the playable world of Gothic 1 Remake. It sits on the northern side of Khorinis and is sealed on all sides by the magical Barrier. Everything the Nameless Hero does in the campaign happens inside this valley.
The remake's playable area is roughly 20 to 30 percent larger than in the original Gothic. NPCs in the valley follow long motion-captured routines that change as the story progresses, so the Colony is designed to feel lived-in rather than scripted for the player's convenience.
Three rival camps control different parts of the valley:
Old Camp controls the oldest and largest ore mine and brokers the ore trade through the Barrier.
New Camp operates a rival mine and funnels ore toward its mages as they search for a way to break the Barrier.
Swamp Camp grows swampweed and worships the Sleeper, an entity it believes will end the Barrier for good.
Magical ore is the only reason the Colony exists. Every camp's power is tied to how much ore it controls and how it trades that ore with King Rhobar II's agents beyond the Barrier. The ore eventually flows out as finished weapons for the war against the Orcs.
