No Shields, No Helmets

Initial no-shields/helmets article (2026-04-22)
Gothic 1 Remake does not implement shields or helmets as equippable gear. This matches the original, where the Nameless Hero could wear full armour sets but did not carry a separate shield or helmet slot. Alkimia Interactive has been explicit that the remake preserves this choice.
Without a shield, the defensive side of combat lives entirely inside the combat system's parry and dodge timing. Players cannot hide behind a big block-everything shield window, which is part of what keeps the tactical pace the original Gothic was known for. Armour sets still exist and still matter for damage mitigation, but defence is an active skill rather than a passive slot.
Skipping helmets also keeps the Nameless Hero's face readable in cutscenes, which lines up with the remake's heavier investment in voice-acted dialogue. The Hero always shows up as a specific person on screen, rather than disappearing behind whatever head-slot armour the player last picked up.
