No Shields, No Helmets

Expanded with confirmed remake preservation of the no-shields-no-helmets design stance
Gothic 1 Remake preserves the 2001 original's "no shields, no helmets" design philosophy. The Hero does not equip a shield, and he does not equip a helmet, even though several NPC models in the Colony are shown wearing them. Alkimia Interactive has addressed this on the game's Steam community threads: the design stance is deliberate and was carried over from the original.
Block with the weapon. Melee blocks are performed with the equipped weapon rather than a shield. A successful, well-timed block triggers the Combat System's parry-and-riposte animation.
Head remains exposed. Armour in the remake is a chest-and-body item. There are no head slots that contribute defensive stats.
No off-hand weapon toggle. The off hand is used for the Flaming Torch and for utility items rather than a second weapon or a shield.
The philosophy is part of why Gothic combat has the feel it does. Removing the shield forces every fight into an active parry-and-dodge exchange rather than a passive turtle, and removing the helmet keeps the Hero's face in every camera shot. Alkimia's public stance is that both are load-bearing parts of the feel they are trying to preserve.
Some NPCs, particularly Old Camp Guards and Orc warriors, are modelled with helmets. The player cannot take those helmets as loot or equip them. The visible helmets are part of the NPC models, not inventory items.
