Magic in Gothic 1 Remake is handled through two related systems: runes, which are permanent magical items only a full mage can use, and scrolls, which are single-use and available to any character willing to buy or find them.
Runes are crafted by joining either the Fire Mages of the Old Camp or the Water Mages of the New Camp. A rune carries a specific spell and is used at the cost of mana rather than at the cost of the rune itself. The downside is that learning to cast a given circle of magic costs learning points.
Scrolls are disposable magic and do not require circle training. Any character can read a scroll, which makes them a handy tool for Heroes who do not commit to the full magic path. They are also how non-mages can still use big emergency spells like healing in a pinch.
Support spells such as Light and Healing.
Offensive spells such as Fireball and Wave of Ice.
Movement spells such as teleportation runes that fast-travel the Hero between known locations.
Spells are grouped into circles of magic. Higher circles unlock more powerful runes, and a mage has to progress through the ranks of either the Fire Circle or the Water Circle to reach them.
