Weapon refinement improves equipment at the Blacksmith in Dagsion's Shopping Arcade. It costs gold and the ores required by the selected weapon.
The Blacksmith becomes available in Chapter 6. Early refinements reach +1 or +2; Part III permits higher levels, with the maximum depending on the weapon. Refinement can improve Might, add another stat bonus or change a weapon's effects and Combat Art.

Checking an upgrade
Parts I and II limit early refinement to +1 or +2. Part III permits higher levels, with weapon-dependent limits reaching +3 through +9. The preview at the Blacksmith shows the exact ore, gold and resulting stats for the selected step.
A family bonus starts at a refinement level: Wooden weapons gain Speed from +6, Bronze gains Defense from +3, Iron gains Dexterity from +3, and Da Mina gains Combat Art critical rate from +3. The numbers in those thresholds are refinement levels, rather than the size of the bonus.
Weapon refinement is separate from Combat Art enhancement. Gold and ores change a weapon at the Blacksmith; Magic Echo Shards improve eligible Arts through Smyrnos. Basic attacks do not consume durability, but Arts do, and a zero-durability weapon needs repair before using them again.
