The Ovate is an Advanced magical class introduced in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Its in-game description reads: "A black-magic user who deals high amounts of damage, cutting through heavy armor." It is the class Hong Hua starts the game in.

The class sits on the offensive side of the game's magic system. Its proficiency is Reason, the attacking school, as opposed to the Faith proficiency that the Bishop, War Monk and Guardian lines build on. The vocabulary is not consistent across everything published so far: the class description and the exam screen both say black magic, while the proficiency listed on the class itself is Reason. Both terms are recorded here as they were given rather than merged, since no source explains how the two schemes line up.
Cutting through heavy armor is the practical point of the class. Physical attacks are the wrong tool against the armored classes, and an Ovate answers them where an axe or a lance struggles, which puts it opposite the Dreadnought and the Armored Knight on a battlefield.

Magic Hit +5 is the only one of the three with a number attached, and the effects of the other two have not been published beyond their names. Bind Speed sits in the mastery slot and unlocks only once the class has been mastered.
The Ovate is the one documented Advanced class with a primary requirement and no secondaries: Black Magic at B, listed elsewhere as Reason B. Like every Advanced class shown so far it is also reported to want a Renown level of at least 8 and a recommended character level of 35, both provisional figures read off a menu screen. Ovate is another word for the vates, a class of seers and sacrificers in Gaulish society, and the Japanese name is that same word transcribed. It is a priestly title rather than a military one, which sets the class apart from the soldier-derived names elsewhere on the roster.
