Ornius Rider

Added the published English class description and the Mount, Dismount and Offense Basics class skills
The Ornius Rider is a Beginner cavalry class in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and the class built around the game's new mount. The ornius is not a horse, a pegasus or a wyvern; it is a large flightless bird kept and ridden in Dagda, and it debuts with this entry. On camera the class was summed up in one line: Ornius Riders can cover more ground.
Field | Value |
|---|---|
Tier | Beginner |
Unit type | Cavalry |
Movement | 5 |
Proficiencies | Lance, Riding, Flying |
Weapons wielded | Sword, Lance, Axe |
Japanese name | 飛駝兵 (Hidahei), literally flying ostrich soldier |
Confirmed user |

Five Movement puts the class a step ahead of the four other Beginner classes, all of which sit at 4 or have no published value. The class description in Japanese reads as cavalry riding an ornius, able to leap over obstacles, and the leaping is the practical difference: an Ornius Rider hops across low obstacles that stop foot units, so its effective reach is wider than the raw movement number suggests.
The class holds the Flying proficiency but cannot actually fly. The ornius is flightless, and everything shown of the class has it hopping obstacles from the ground rather than crossing terrain the way a genuine flier would. The proficiency still matters for progression, since it feeds the mount and flight-related class requirements further up the ladder, including the Wing Soldier and Dragoon lines. Read the Flying entry on an Ornius Rider as a training category, not as a movement type.
The ornius are large flightless birds used as mounts in Dagda, roughly the size of a real-world ostrich or emu. More than one variety exists; a larger breed called the meganius is named among them. Japanese narration describing the game's cavalry lists riders of horses and of ostriches side by side, which is the clearest statement of where the ornius sits: it is a second mount animal in the same role as the horse rather than a replacement for it.
Mounts have to be befriended before their riding skills take effect. A mount listed as a Wild Ornius is reported to carry a riding ability of Movement +2, and the route following Cai lets you feed mount animals at the stable in Dagsion to build that relationship.
The class name changed during localisation. The first trailer in 2025 gave it as Flying-Ornius Rider; by June 2026 the English name had settled to Ornius Rider, and material still carrying the older form is describing this same class rather than a separate one. The Japanese name, 飛駝兵 (Hidahei), reads literally as flying ostrich soldier, which is where the earlier English form came from.
Language | Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
English | Ornius Rider | Earlier localised as Flying-Ornius Rider |
Japanese | 飛駝兵 (Hidahei) | Flying ostrich soldier |
French | Cavalier ornius | Ornius rider |
German | Orniusritter | Ornius knight |
Italian | Cavaliere ornius | Ornius knight |
An Armored Ornius Rider appears among the Specialty classes, keeping the mount but adding armor; it is listed with Sword, Lance and Axe and with the Flying proficiency. A third ornius-mounted entry circulates under the old Flying Ornius Rider name, which most likely reflects the rename rather than a distinct class. An enemy class recorded as Skellion is also reported riding an ornius.
Two class skills have been named for the Ornius Rider: Mount and Dismount, and Offense Basics. No effect figure has been published for either. The first of the two is the more interesting, because it means the mount can be left behind: a dismounted Ornius Rider is reclassified from Cavalry to Infantry, which changes what terrain it can cross and which effective-damage weapons hit it. Weapons covers the bonus damage that cavalry-effective weapons deal, and the Ridersbane is the named example. Nothing published states when dismounting is available or what it costs.
No base stats, growth rates or stat modifiers have been published for this class. The movement value above is the only number available. The English class description has since been published and reads that the class is mounted upon an ornius and can leap over obstacles, which matches the Japanese wording.
Classes sets this entry against the other four Beginner classes and the mounted lines above it. Cai is the one confirmed rider, and the reported overworld command that lets him capture animals to ride is covered on World Map and Exploration.
