Vampire Combat and Night Abilities
September 11, 2026 at 01:25 AM
Moved Ravenous Flock out to the Witchcraft side and noted Charge as a Swordmastery ability, then added a Vrakhir blood section covering Scarlet Shield, Shadowstorm, Blood Surge, Piercing Shriek and Mesmerize and how blood vials work
After sunset, Coen's vampire nature takes over, replacing his daytime sword and Hex magic with a completely different combat and traversal toolkit. Vampire form grants claw-based melee attacks, supernatural mobility, health regeneration through blood consumption, and access to areas that are unreachable during the day. The trade-off is a blood craving system that punishes careless play with loss of control.

At night, Coen fights with vampiric claws instead of a sword. His strikes carry greater strength and supernatural agility, letting him tear into enemy armor. Many of the principles from the directional combat system still apply to claw attacks. Coen can also bite enemies mid-combat to regenerate health, which replaces the consumable-based healing of his human form.
Nighttime enemies include blood guards (tainted humans who serve the vampires) and ancient vampires with supernatural powers such as blood whips. These encounters demand different tactics than daytime fights against human soldiers.

Vampire form grants three movement abilities that transform how Coen interacts with the environment:
Ability | Description |
|---|---|
Shadowstep | teleport short distances by transforming into a moving shadow. Used both for repositioning in combat and for reaching high or distant platforms |
Planeshift | walk up walls and across ceilings, opening vertical exploration routes that are completely inaccessible during the day |
Clawride | high-speed vertical drops that can be used for rapid descent or as a combat attack |
Full exploration of Svartrau requires these abilities. Rooftops, upper floors of buildings, and vertical shortcuts throughout the city only become accessible after nightfall.

Health and hunger are interconnected in vampire form. When Coen takes damage, he risks losing control of his vampire nature. This can lead to involuntary draining of NPCs during interactions, which locks out dialogue options and entire quest lines. The consequences are permanent for that playthrough.
Players have choices about how they manage blood craving. They can drain humans just enough to knock them unconscious, or drain them fully (killing them). Feeding on animals is also an option. Feeding on important NPCs can permanently alter the story. The system creates ongoing tension between the power of vampire abilities and the risk of losing control at a critical moment.
During the day, Coen's health does not regenerate naturally. He relies on crafted consumables (tinctures and concoctions from the crafting system) to heal. At night, vampiric regeneration activates automatically, but the hunger management trade-off adds its own pressure. This difference shapes how players approach combat in each form: daytime fights require resource preparation, while nighttime fights require hunger discipline.
The Road to Launch livestream on April 28, 2026 named several night-side perks that feed into vampire combat and traversal. Voracious Bite drains an enemy's blood to restore health and rewards aggressive play. Death from Above is a vertical lunge that turns Plane Shift wall traversal into an opener. Piercing Shriek is a wide-area sonic disable. Charge closes distance from medium range. Most of these perks are bought from shrines, although the Precision passive is found in a manual rather than purchased on a tree.
The same stream introduced wolf transformation as an early-game traversal perk that lets Coen cover long distances at night while in a wolf form. Rebel Wolves described the wolf form as a nod to the original Dracula novel, and noted that it is the night-side answer to the absence of a horse. During the day, the Mercurial Fervour hex provides a comparable speed boost to keep daytime traversal competitive with the wolf-form routes available after sunset.
The same stream also demonstrated Ravenous Flock, an area attack that summons a flock of crows. In the finished game that ability sits in the Witchcraft tree rather than the night toolkit, and it is covered under Hex Magic instead of here. Charge, listed above, is likewise documented as a Swordmastery ability rather than a night-side perk. Neither correction puts the stream in doubt: both were shown in a pre-launch build, and only the tree they belong to has changed.
A second route into the night toolkit bypasses the skill tree entirely. Defeating one of the ancient vampires and then choosing to drink from the body grants that vampire's own ability outright, with no skill points spent. Guides covering the finished game describe three such grants, alongside two more that arrive through quests.
Ability | How it is obtained |
|---|---|
Scarlet Shield | Drinking from Ambrus after defeating him. |
Shadowstorm | Drinking from Bakir after defeating him. |
Blood Surge | Drinking from Xanthe after defeating her. |
Piercing Shriek | Completing the quest Our Rotten Roots. |
Mesmerize | Eating the mandrake at the end of the quest The Night of Horrors. |
Vrakhir blood also turns up as loot. Vials of it drop from murohn defeated in their dens at night and from a handful of quests, and those vials behave like the ability manuals used by the other two trees: consuming one either grants the ability or raises a level of an ability already known. Drinking Vrakhir blood in any form also pushes Corruption up sharply, which matters because everything in the night set that is not covered above unlocks by raising Corruption rather than by finding a specific item.
One caveat from the same coverage: whether the drink option is available at all depends on when the fight happens. Fighting one of the three during a daytime assault on the castle kills them without the option to feed, which closes off the ability for that run.
These placements come from post-launch guide coverage rather than from the studio, so treat the individual unlock routes as reported rather than confirmed. The night tree has no published complete roster of any kind.
