Rhinoceros Beetles spawn on tree trunks in heavily wooded areas. Look for thick trees surrounded by smaller trees in groups of five or more. They appear during both day and night, though sightings are more common at night. The beetles are large and slow-moving compared to other insects, but they still flee if you approach too fast. Slow your movement and interact quickly when the prompt appears.
In addition to wild gathering, Rhinoceros Beetles can be purchased from certain vendors and are occasionally awarded as quest rewards or dropped by enemies and bosses.
Consuming a Rhinoceros Beetle directly from your inventory provides:
Defense +6.0 for 1 minute
Spirit +1.0
The Defense buff is noticeably stronger than the Longhorn Beetle's +4.0, and the sell price of 38 is over three times higher. Despite these values, the beetle's primary worth is as a crafting ingredient for dye production.
The Rhinoceros Beetle functions as the primary color-family modifier for red and orange dyes. In every red dye recipe, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle is required alongside the base herb and brightness insects. For orange dyes, the recipe follows the same structure but uses Yellow Herb as the base. Example orange dye recipes:
Dye | Ingredients |
|---|---|
Bright Orange | 10x Yellow Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, 3x Longhorn Beetle |
Rich Orange | 10x Yellow Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, 2x Longhorn Beetle, 1x Stag Beetle |
10x Yellow Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, 1x Longhorn Beetle, 1x Stag Beetle | |
Dark Orange | 10x Yellow Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, 1x Longhorn Beetle, 2x Stag Beetle |
Deep Orange | 10x Yellow Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, 3x Stag Beetle |
The same pattern applies to red dyes, but with Pink Medicinal Herb replacing Yellow Herb as the base ingredient.
The in-game description reads: "An insect wearing armor like a knight. It is characterized by a wide and thick torso and a large horn on its head." Males use the horn for fighting and courtship displays. These beetles sustain themselves by consuming tree sap, and their distinctive coloring makes them especially valuable as a natural pigment source for dye production.
Longhorn Beetle - controls brightness in dye recipes; used alongside the Rhinoceros Beetle
Stag Beetle - pushes dye shades darker when substituted for Longhorn Beetles
Rhinoceros Beetles are large and slow-moving. Check tree trunks and logs during nighttime for the best chances.
Collect all insects you encounter. Different alchemy recipes require specific insect types.
Combine insect gathering with herb and flower collection for efficient alchemy material runs.
