Longhorn Beetles spawn in the Hernand and Demeniss regions. They appear on dead logs and tree trunks, especially north of Hernand City near cliffs and forest edges. Look for standing dead wood and fallen logs in forested clearings. The beetles are skittish and will flee if you approach too quickly, so slow your movement before interacting.
A Longhorn Beetle can be consumed directly from your inventory without cooking. Consuming one provides:
Defense +4.0 for 1 minute
Spirit +1.0
These effects are minor and short-lived. In most cases the beetle is more valuable as a crafting ingredient than as a consumable.
The Longhorn Beetle is one of the key insect types that controls brightness when crafting dyes at the Alchemy Cauldron. The number and type of beetles in a dye recipe determines the final shade within each color family. Recipes using Longhorn Beetles follow this pattern across all ten base colors:
Shade | Insect Ratio |
|---|---|
Bright | 3x Longhorn Beetle |
Rich | 2x Longhorn Beetle, 1x Stag Beetle |
Standard | 1x Longhorn Beetle, 1x Stag Beetle |
Dark | 1x Longhorn Beetle, 2x Stag Beetle |
Each recipe also requires 10x of the appropriate herb (which determines the base color) plus 3x of a secondary insect modifier specific to the color family. For red and orange dyes, that modifier is the Rhinoceros Beetle.
The Dark Red Dye recipe requires 10x Pink Medicinal Herb, 3x Rhinoceros Beetle, and 3x Longhorn Beetle. The Longhorn Beetle acts as the brightness modifier, pushing the red toward a darker shade.
The in-game description reads: "An insect that kills trees by drying them out. It is characterized by antennae that are longer than its body." Adults gnaw on tree sap while larvae burrow into the wood, which explains why they are commonly found on dead or dying trees. Their vibrant coloring makes them useful as a natural source of pigment for dye production.
Rhinoceros Beetle - another insect used as a color-family modifier in dye recipes
Stag Beetle - controls the dark end of the brightness spectrum in dye recipes
Dragonfly - an insect gatherable found in similar forest environments
Centipede - another alchemy material gathered from the ground
Check dead trees and fallen logs for Longhorn Beetles. Their long antennae make them distinctive.
Collect all insects you encounter. Different alchemy recipes require specific insect types.
Combine insect gathering with herb and flower collection for efficient alchemy material runs.
