Horseback Racing
September 27, 2026 at 05:35 AM
Replaced pre-launch speculation with the released racing rules, the Darkhooves Grand Prix challenge, its unlock and reward, and horse advice
Horseback racing is a competitive minigame in Crimson Desert in which the player races on horseback against NPC riders. It was first shown in the Features Overview #3 trailer before launch. In the released game the racing challenge is run on a track in Demeniss, where each race is head-to-head against one opponent over three laps, and horse races also appear inside faction quests.

The horse you bring to a race matters. Mounts in Crimson Desert have individual stats that affect their behavior in and out of racing:
Horses can be acquired through horse taming in the wild, purchased from stables in settlements, or obtained as quest rewards. Each horse has different base stats, so building a stable of horses with different strengths gives you options for different race types.
The main race track is in Demeniss, beside Breesman Pasture. It becomes available after Demeniss is liberated, from Chapter 10 onward, and winning a race there unlocks the Darkhooves Grand Prix challenge. Quests also use horse races: Hooves Through the Wind, part of the House Circus quests that lead toward the Legendary Animals, asks the player to win one.

Races on the Demeniss track work as follows.
Each race is against one opponent at a time over three laps of the track.
Opponents rubber-band, so it is hard to build or lose a large lead; steady speed and stamina management decide most races.
Keep at least the inner blue stamina bar for the final corner, then sprint to the finish at full speed.
Horseshoes add stamina regeneration. Other horse equipment affects only health and damage, so it does not help in a race.
The Darkhooves Grand Prix challenge asks for a win streak of three races followed by a win against the Champion. Completing it rewards the Riding Attire, a leather chest piece that reduces horse taming difficulty. The challenge belongs to the Minigame category of Challenges, and finishing that category counts toward the True Gamer achievement.
Horseback racing draws directly on the mount system, since each horse has its own speed and stamina and those values grow as the horse levels up. For the racing challenge the usual recommendation is the legendary horse Royler, which has the highest starting stamina and speed of the legendary horses. Raising it to at least level 4 by riding and petting it makes the Champion race noticeably easier.

Patch 2.03.00 on September 18, 2026 fixed an issue where the opponent's horse would move too quickly during horse races.
Tame Royler and raise it to at least level 4 before attempting the Champion.
Practice mounted movement in the open world before entering competitive races, especially turning, sprinting and stamina management.
Do not hold full gallop for the whole race. Keep the inner stamina bar for the final corner.
Equip horseshoes for extra stamina regeneration; other horse gear does not affect racing.
