Exploration and Traversal
February 11, 2026 at 08:52 AM
Added mech missile combat, dragon aerial fortress attacks, character-specific traversal gadgets (Damiane's propeller), world-larger-than-RDR2 context, hot air balloons to Abyss Islands
Crimson Desert takes place on Pywel, a seamless open-world continent larger than Red Dead Redemption 2 with no loading screens between its five regions. Traversal is a core part of the experience. Getting around this world requires a mix of on-foot movement, mounts, vehicles, and character-specific gadgets.
Walking and sprinting -- Basic traversal. Sprinting costs stamina.
Climbing -- Vertical traversal on cliff faces, walls, and structures. Governed by stamina. Different surface types affect climbing speed. Skills can improve climbing stamina and speed.
Gliding -- The Crow Wings glider (obtained through the Abyss) allows gliding from high points. Stamina-limited but covers large horizontal distances.
Swimming -- Water traversal. Stamina-limited.
Sliding -- Downhill momentum traversal. Can be used to evade into combat.
Each playable character has unique traversal capabilities:
Kliff -- Crow Wings glider, standard climbing. Generalist mobility.
Damiane -- Propeller gadget for powered flight and extended gliding. This is a character-specific tool, not a mount. It allows Damiane to fly to elevated areas, cross gaps other characters cannot, and reposition vertically during exploration and combat.
Oongka -- Brute strength traversal. His combat leap slams cover significant ground.
See the full Mounts page for details. Key mount types:
The primary long-distance transport. Horses have bonding mechanics, stamina, and mounted combat. Different horse types have different stats. Horses can drift around corners.
Late-game mounts. Dragons enable aerial combat, fire breath attacks, and the ability to assault enemy fortresses from the sky. Dragon riding transforms traversal into a three-dimensional experience. You can attack fortified positions that would be difficult or impossible to assault on foot.
A missile-firing mech with full combat capabilities. The mech is pilotable and includes a machine gun, missile launchers, and an EMP ability. It functions as both a traversal vehicle and a combat platform. Found in the Delesyia region (the steampunk/technology area).
Bears -- Early-to-mid-game mount option.
Raptors -- Fast, desert-associated mounts.
Wolves -- Rideable mount option.
Hot air balloons -- Used to reach Abyss Islands (floating landmasses above Pywel).
Players can grapple enemies off their mounts during combat and commandeer the mount. If an enemy is riding a horse or other mount, you can pull them off and take over. This is a tactical option during faction battles and open-world encounters.
Fast travel is available between discovered waypoints and settlements. Traces of the Abyss scattered across the world also serve as fast travel nodes.
The world has dynamic environmental hazards tied to regions:
Sandstorms in the Crimson Desert region
Blizzards in mountain areas and Pailune
Toxic swamps
Avalanches in alpine regions
Temperature systems that affect gameplay
Weather is dynamic and affects gameplay:
Rain -- Makes climbing surfaces slippery.
Fog -- Reduces enemy detection range (useful for stealth).
Storms -- May disable certain Axiom Bracelet abilities.
A full day-night cycle affects enemy behavior, NPC schedules, and visibility. Some encounters and events are time-specific.
