The Barber Shop and Dyehouse are cosmetic customization facilities in Crimson Desert. Located at the Greymane Camp and in towns across Pywel, these facilities allow players to alter the appearance of all three playable characters and customize the look of their equipment. The Barber Shop Tent handles hair, facial hair, tattoos, and eyebrow modifications, while the Dyehouse is a separate facility dedicated to equipment coloring and material finishing. Together they form the core of character customization in Crimson Desert. Every customization option is purely cosmetic and has no effect on gameplay stats or combat performance. Pearl Abyss has confirmed that there are no microtransactions or cosmetic shops in the game. All appearance options are earned through gameplay.
Facial bone structure and body proportions are fixed for each playable character. Unlike games with character creators, Crimson Desert preserves the physical identity of Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka for narrative consistency. Each character is individually motion-captured by their voice actor, and the fixed appearance ensures cutscenes and in-game expressions match the performer's physical performance. Customization is limited to hair, facial hair, tattoos, and equipment coloring.

The Barber Shop Tent is located at Greymane Camp and allows players to modify the physical appearance of all three playable characters at any point during the game. Each visit costs a small amount of in-game gold, with the fee varying by modification type. All changes can be previewed before confirming and paying.

The Dyehouse is a separate facility from the Barber Shop, also located at Greymane Camp. It lets players change the color and material finish of armor, weapons, and mount equipment. The dye system supports per-section precision: rather than applying a single color to an entire piece, players can target individual sections within each armor piece for separate color treatment. For example, an armor piece might have separate slots for the main surface, cloth details, and accent trim, each accepting a different color. Material finish can also be adjusted alongside color, allowing players to change how surfaces reflect light and interact with the environment.
Item Type | Details |
|---|---|
Armor Pieces | Individual dye slots for separate parts of each armor piece, allowing mixed color schemes across main surface, cloth, and trim. |
Color and finish customization for currently equipped weapons, changing their visual style. | |
Horse Equipment | Section-by-section coloring of horse caparison and armor plates. Horse tack sets from pre-orders are also dyeable. |

Dyes are obtained through two primary methods. Players can discover them while exploring the open world, finding them in loot drops, hidden chests, and quest rewards. Alternatively, dyes can be crafted through the alchemy system using ingredients gathered from the environment. The dye color palette mirrors the hair color options available at the Barber Shop, spanning natural tones through vivid colors. Dyes are not sold through any cash shop or premium storefront. This ties the cosmetic system into the broader crafting loop without requiring any real-money purchases.
Both facilities become available at Greymane Camp as it expands through the early main story. The Barber Shop Tent and the Dyehouse are separate buildings within the camp. Players can also find Barber Shops and Dyehouses in most towns and cities across Pywel. No special unlock requirements exist beyond completing the introductory sequences of the game. Visits to the Barber Shop cost a small amount of gold, while the Dyehouse requires dye items to apply colors.
Pearl Abyss has been explicit that all cosmetic options in the Barber Shop and Dyehouse are earned through gameplay. The studio's PR Director, Will Powers, stated that the design goal is for players to see another character wearing a particular look and "know that they earned it through gameplay." This philosophy extends to pre-order cosmetics, which are visual variants of in-game equipment types with no stat advantages. The Barber Shop and Dyehouse are the only cosmetic systems in the game; there is no separate cosmetic shop or premium currency.
