Bamboo Spear
May 16, 2026 at 08:49 AM
Added animal-taming utility: bamboo stalks as a low-attack subdual tool for lion and tiger special mounts, and how to harvest fresh from the bamboo forest
The Bamboo Spear is a two-handed weapon in Crimson Desert described as a simple and effective spear that grants basic attack speed and critical rate. Despite that modest description, the numbers tell a different story. At 20 Attack Power with both Attack Speed Lv.1 and Critical Rate Lv.1, the Bamboo Spear is one of the most well-rounded two-handed weapons in the game.

Spears in Crimson Desert provide reach that other two-handed weapons lack. The Bamboo Spear's thrust attacks keep enemies at arm's length, giving you a safer spacing advantage compared to the sweeping arcs of greatswords and longswords. Combined with its speed and crit bonuses, it functions as both an offensive and defensive tool.

The Bamboo Spear can be found on a weapons rack in the area before the Ludvig boss fight at Pailune Castle. It is placed there as a pickup for players who want an alternative weapon option before heading into the encounter. Since Ludvig is an aggressive boss who fights with lightning-infused twin blades, having a spear with superior reach can be a real advantage for maintaining safe distance.
Because the spear is found rather than purchased, there is no buy price associated with it. Its sell value of 1.20 Silver Coins is low, so selling it is not worthwhile. Keep it for combat use instead.
The Bamboo Spear's thrust attacks are its defining advantage. Against Ludvig specifically, the extra reach lets you poke during openings that would be too risky with a shorter weapon. After Ludvig finishes a combo, step in with a quick thrust and step back out before his next attack chain begins.
Both secondary bonuses contribute to consistent damage. The Attack Speed Lv.1 bonus means your thrusts come out slightly faster than they would with other spearsand the Critical Rate Lv.1 bonus gives each hit a chance to deal bonus damage. Over a prolonged fight, the combination adds up.
Beyond the Ludvig fight, the Bamboo Spear remains useful for general exploration and combat. Its high base attack power and dual bonuses mean it stays competitive against enemies well past the point where you find it. With 5 core slots available for customization, it can be tailored to multiple playstyles.
Bamboo stalks, the harvestable equivalent of the Bamboo Spear, are the community-recommended tool for subduing certain Special Mounts without killing them. The 1.06.00 Lion and Tiger taming flows specifically require a very low attack weapon because maxed-out swords (30+ attack) and high-level unarmed strikes will kill the target before its trust meter opens.
Bamboo stalks function as a one-handed sword with approximately 3 attack power, which is low enough to bash a regular lion or tiger into the staggered state required for the Ride prompt. Compared with a typical late-game sword (~34 attack), bamboo stalks deal under 10 percent of the damage per hit, which is the gap needed to leave the target alive at the moment of subdual.
Bamboo stalks are not purchased; they are harvested fresh from the Bamboo Forest on the outskirts of the bamboo grove between Hernand and Demeniss, south of the Ironwood. The route is the same area the player passes through during the early-game story.
Step | Action |
|---|---|
1 | Fast travel to the nearest point inside the bamboo grove. The map marker sits in between Hernand and Demeniss, south of the Ironwood. |
2 | Run to the outskirts of the grove and find a cluster of bamboo trees. |
3 | Grapple to the floor near the bamboo and use a focused Force Palm. The shockwave shakes a load of bamboo stalks off the trees onto the ground. |
4 | Pick up the stalks. Each stalk functions as a one-handed bamboo weapon with three attack and the standard refinement slots. |
5 | Equip a bamboo stalk in your one-handed slot before engaging a tame target. Keep your normal weapons stowed but available for the lionesses or pack wolves around the alpha. |
Bamboo stalks are renewable. If the first batch is not enough for an extended hunting trip, return to the grove and force palm a second cluster.
Use a bamboo stalk wherever the goal is to leave the target alive at very low HP for the Ride prompt. Confirmed targets in the 1.07 special-mount system include:
Target | Why a Bamboo Stalk Helps |
|---|---|
Maxed sword combos can knock the lion off cliffs near the Vernia spawn or kill it outright. Bamboo gives intermittent damage with safer chip values. | |
Tigers dodge well and counter-attack; the low damage per hit prevents accidental kills during longer chip-and-block sequences. | |
Useful as a backup if your main weapon's splash damage threatens the alpha during pack clears. Force Palm is still the primary subdual tool for wolves. |
