Major expansion: added full in-game description, Abyss Without Balance quest walkthrough with puzzle steps, farming locations table, Health enhancement section with Scholastone Institute research prerequisites, crafting Abyss Cores with Elowen, and expanded tips
The Abyss Cell is a crafting material in Crimson Desert classified under Abyss Items. Its in-game description reads: "A stone with a smooth surface, etched with subtle patterns and fine cracks. When held, a faint trace of Abyssal power can be felt along with a cool sensation, though its unstable nature demands control. It is said to be carried by animals imbued with the energy of the Abyss."
Abyss Cells serve two primary purposes. They are the key ingredient for crafting Abyss Cores through a witch, and they are required to enhance your Health stat past Level 11 in the skill tree. Players first encounter the Abyss Cell during the Chapter 1 main quest Abyss Without Balance, where synthesizing one is part of a puzzle inside the Axiom Archive.

The Abyss Cell is introduced during Abyss Without Balance, the twelfth main quest in Chapter 1: The First Encounter. After completing Polar Opposites, Kliff enters the Axiom Archive in the heart of the Abyss, where he must traverse a skybridge, solve a power core puzzle, and synthesize the first Abyss Cell using the Force Palm ability.
After meeting Alustin inside the Axiom Archive, use Axiom Force on the alignment device ahead. Grab the blue glowing center and rotate it with the D-pad until it glows brightly and makes a loud charging sound, then stop. This powers the skybridge, which opens after a few seconds. Cross the bridge by navigating a short platforming section that includes slow-moving diagonal platforms between floating islands.
On the central platform, activate the Abyss Nexus by stepping on the pedestal. Then use Axiom Force to grab the floating blue cube (the power core) in the center of the area and place it on the deactivated lantern to the right, just like the one already active beside it. This removes the wall blocking the floor below.
Drop down into the lower area. You will see a holographic demonstration of someone punching a cell. Hold the Observe button (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox) while watching the hologram to learn the Force Palm ability. Next, use Axiom Force to grab the floating blue chip and place it into its slot, similar to inserting a CPU chip. Then hold down the Force Palm button to charge up, and release it on the cell when the holograms disappear to reveal the real thing. After a few seconds, the Abyss Cell synthesizes.
Look to the left and up from where you used Force Palm. Climb the pillar leading to the large circular powered device. Position yourself at the center of the device and use Force Palm on it. The device changes from yellow to blue when fully activated. This completes the "Activate the Abyss power supply" objective.
After activating the power supply, climb the stairs above the device and walk toward the glowing item to collect the Abyss Artifact. Completing this quest rewards 2 Abyss Artifacts and permanently unlocks the Force Palm skill. Speak to White Crow to conclude Chapter 1. Players can also complete the "Axiom Archive" and "Ethereal Pathway" exploration challenges during this quest.
Outside of the initial story quest, Abyss Cells are obtained as random drops from Abyss-corrupted creatures found throughout the open world. These creatures spawn near Mysterious Energy icons on the map and around Abyss Nexus fast travel points. The drop is not guaranteed from every kill, so farming may be necessary.
Enemy | Notes |
|---|---|
Wandershrubs | Small Abyss-corrupted plant creatures. A spiky variant with stones embedded in their bodies has a higher chance of dropping Abyss Cells. Relatively weak and easy to defeat. |
Bismuth Oreback Crabs | Disguise themselves as metallic ore deposits on the ground. Hit them with Force Palm to force them to reveal themselves. They also drop Bismuth Ore. Be careful, as they deal more damage than their size suggests. |
Other Abyss Creatures | Various enemies tainted by Abyssal energy that spawn near Mysterious Energy locations and Abyss Dungeons. |
Abyss Cells can be farmed by repeatedly defeating Abyss creatures at specific locations. The best spots tend to cluster around Abyss Nexus teleporters and areas with high concentrations of Abyss enemies.
Location | Details |
|---|---|
Drakesfall Castle | North of Hernand. A reliable early-game farming spot with multiple Abyss creatures in the vicinity. |
South of Anvil Hill | Below the Abyss Cresset in this area. Several Bismuth Oreback Crabs spawn along the cliff edge. |
Abyss Nexus Points | Bismuth Oreback Crabs and Wandershrubs frequently spawn near Abyss Nexus fast travel locations throughout Pywel. |
Bring a powerful weapon and be ready to dodge when fighting Bismuth Oreback Crabs, as they can deal surprising damage. After clearing an area, you can fast travel away and return later for enemies to respawn.
The primary use for Abyss Cells is crafting Abyss Cores. After completing Chapter 5 (Exposed Plot) and the "Witch of Wisdom" questline, speak to Elowen the Witch at the Witch's House in the Witchwoods of Hernand and select "Craft Abyss Cores" to view available recipes. Abyss Cores are socketable items that can be embedded into weapons and armor to provide various stat bonuses and effects.
Abyss Cells are also required to enhance your Health stat past Level 11 in the Skills menu. When you reach Health Level 11, the game displays the message: "Not enough understanding of the Abyssal powers. You must acquire knowledge through research." To unlock further Health upgrades, you must complete Abyssal Energy Research at the Scholastone Institute with Grunvar.
The research prerequisites are:
Complete "Abyssal Environment Research"
Complete "Abyss Energy Restoration Phenomenon Research" (available as a map objective)
Examine the Ancient Abyss Research wall located west of Grunvar
Speak with the Scholastone Research Assistant
Select "Abyssal Energy Research" in dialogue with Grunvar (costs 130 Silver Coins, takes 20 in-game hours)
Once the research is complete, you can spend Abyss Cells to continue leveling Health beyond Level 11.
Abyss Cells may also appear as ingredients in certain crafting recipes for specialized Abyss-related equipment and items. Some quest objectives involve combining Abyss Cells with other Abyss materials for advanced upgrades.
Defeat every Wandershrub and Bismuth Oreback Crab you encounter while exploring. They are easy to miss, but Abyss Cells become increasingly valuable as the game progresses.
Bismuth Oreback Crabs look like metallic rocks on the ground. Use Force Palm near suspicious ore deposits to check whether a crab is hiding.
Abyss Cells complement Abyss Artifacts and Faded Abyss Artifacts in the Abyss progression system. Keep a stock of Abyss Cells for when you unlock witch crafting and Health enhancement later in the game.
If you are short on Abyss Cells, prioritize the Drakesfall Castle area north of Hernand as your farming route, since it is accessible early in the game and has a good density of Abyss creatures.
The sell price of 3.8 Silver per cell is quite low. It is almost always better to save your Abyss Cells for crafting and upgrades rather than selling them.
