The Fallen is the first major boss of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. Konami describes him as a mysterious monster terrorising the people of Paris, and the first threat Rose encounters in the sewers. He holds one of the three keys that open the gate into the Catacombs.
Appearance and Attacks
He is a hulking figure with metal claws, built along the lines of a werewolf or a Hyde, and he fights with a mix of reach and pressure. His health pool is large, and his attacks are well telegraphed enough that the fight rewards patience rather than reflexes.
Attack | Behaviour |
|---|---|
Leaping strike | Closes distance quickly. |
Holy Cross throw | A thrown cross that travels out and returns like a boomerang. |
Whip attack | Reaches most of the width of the screen. |
Wall swing | Reported in the second phase: he grips Rose with a far-reaching whip and swings between the walls of the arena. |
Two Phases
Preview accounts of the fight describe a second phase triggered by cutting or cleaving his thrown Holy Cross out of the air rather than by a health threshold. That trigger comes from a single account and has not been confirmed by Konami, so treat the mechanism as reported rather than settled. What the second phase contains is the whip grip and the wall swinging above.
Rewards
Reward | What it does |
|---|---|
Holy Cross Arcana | A thrown, boomerang-style cross that can be caught on the return. |
The whip ability | Reported under the name Pendulum and also called the Arcana Whip. It is the grapple and swing that opens up the map. Whether it is the Vampire Killer is not settled; see Whip and Traversal. |
A Catacombs key | One of the three needed to open the gate. |
Boss rewards in this game are routinely multi-part rather than a single drop, and The Fallen is the clearest early example of that pattern.
Story
The Fallen is a victim rather than a villain. Some outside force was controlling his mind and driving him to gather souls, and defeating him breaks the spell. After the fight he is sealed into Rose's tarot deck like the other bosses and becomes a voice she can talk to, and the version that answers is the one from before the corruption. He is amiable and cooperative as a companion.
He is also the one boss whose true identity the game holds back. Other bosses give up their real names when they are defeated; he stays cagey about his, and no source outside the game reveals it.
The conversation with him is where Rose states the terms of her own curse: she has to control her emotions, or it will take over her whole body and kill her. More on that on Rose Belmont, and on the rest of the roster on Bosses.
