Rose Belmont is the protagonist of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse and an original character created for this game. She is the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, and she carries Dracula's curse in her right arm. Konami's character material describes her as a new protagonist who bears that curse, and shows it as a red mark creeping from her elbow down to her hand.
Family and Motivation
Sypha Belnades fought Dracula alongside Trevor, fell victim to his curse, and died soon after Rose was born. Rose carries guilt over her mother's death, and she carries the tarot deck Sypha left behind. That deck is not a keepsake in gameplay terms: it is the container for the Arcana she takes from every boss she defeats.
Trevor answers a letter from the Bishop and brings Rose down the River Seine to Paris. They are separated on the docks in the opening, and Trevor steps back from the hunt early because Rose is already experienced. The team has framed that as a deliberate way to show two Belmont generations acting at the same time, which the series rarely does. Trevor's own bio credits him with the Vampire Killer, the family's holy whip.
Rose is written as young, talkative and openly excited by the adventure in front of her, and as someone trying to step out of her parents' shadow. She is also naive about what she is walking into.
The Curse
The curse is the reason the game has its title, and it is treated as an active problem rather than background lore. It is said to feed on aggression, and its origin has not been explained. Speaking to The Fallen, Rose says she has to control her emotions or the curse will take over her whole body and kill her. The story frames it as something passed from mother to daughter.
Konami has not published a mechanical effect for the curse. Nothing in the hands-on build tied it to a stat, a meter or a fail state, so it should be treated as a story element until the game ships.
Arsenal
Item | Notes |
|---|---|
Whip | Used for combat and for movement. The ability version is granted after the first major boss and is reported under the name Pendulum. See Whip and Traversal. |
Melee weapons | Drawn from seven families, each with several weapons inside it. See Weapons. |
Tarot deck | Left to her by Sypha. Holds the Arcana taken from defeated bosses and stores the clues she collects. |
Relics | Passive equipment, up to three at once. See Relics. |
Health flasks | Three at the start, refilled at checkpoints and mirror rooms. |
Konami's own character copy says Rose wields a variety of weapons in addition to her whip. Whether the whip she earns during the opening hours is the Vampire Killer itself has not been settled; the whip page covers what is and is not confirmed there.
Movement
Rose has the broadest traversal kit the opening of the game shows to any character. A wall jump and a floor slide are both available from the start, along with a ledge grab. Her dodge sits on the same button as the slide and carries invincibility frames, and a double tap turns it into a backflip. A forward dash lets her pass under projectiles and reposition behind an enemy. Once she has the whip ability she can swing from anchors and grapple enemies.
There is no double jump in the preview build. Level design in that build points at places a double jump would open, and the team declined to answer when asked about it, so treat it as unconfirmed rather than absent from the finished game. Details of the ground game are on Combat and Controls.
Costumes
Three alternate outfits for Rose are attached to storefront purchases rather than to gameplay. The Trevor Style Costume and the Sypha Style Costume come with the Midnight Edition. The Alucard Style Costume is the pre-order and early-purchase bonus on every edition, and it is the only form Alucard takes in this game. Full contents are on Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses.
Dialogue
Lines confirmed from Konami's own trailers:
"Dracula's castle is just ahead. I have come here to destroy you. Just like my father, mother, and their allies before me."
"No one believed me when I said the newest Belmont would be a girl."
"I am Rose Belmont, and I will hunt the night."
Spoken to Rose: "God has given you another chance, Rose. You must use it wisely to better control your curse and strengthen yourself."
An animated scene opens the game. Voice acting is present but Konami has not published a cast list, so no performer is credited here.
