Shidou is the purification soldier assigned to watch what Emma does, and the closest thing the game has to a recurring human antagonist. He is a sealer like Emma, he wants the power she carries as the Vessel for himself, and he fights bonded to his own Nue Malefact. He is voiced in Japanese by Satoshi Mikami. English guides sometimes list him under the descriptor Male Purifier.

Shidou is behind the attack that opens the game. The bonded Nue Malefact that hits Emma's settlement in Chapter 1 is his, sent to take her power before she can accept the task she has been given, and the fight that follows is what pushes Emma and Koo onto the walking vessel in the first place. He then shadows the route west, turning up at three points along it to try again.
His pairing with a bonded beast mirrors Emma and Koo directly. Both of them fight as a human and a companion working in tandem, which is what makes him the story's clearest counterweight rather than just another obstacle.

Both halves of the fight are weak to Poison, which makes the Hunter's Sword and poison ammunition the standard preparation.

Take the beast out first and deal with Shidou second. He is the more readable of the two, most of his attacks can be parried, and Koo's Kiku: Bloom Strike knocks him to the ground for a free damage window that pairs well with Entanglement Overdrive. Keep ranged weapons for Nue Malefact, and never let the two of them get on opposite sides of Emma.
