Bow and Ranged Combat
August 17, 2026 at 02:48 PM
Named the two shipped ranged weapons, replaced the ammunition model with the six arrow and bolt types and their manuals, and rebuilt the skill section around the shipped branch
While Emma's primary weapon is the katana, Beast of Reincarnation also gives her ranged options that sit alongside her melee kit and her stealth approach. There are exactly two ranged weapons in the game, the Zangetsu Bow and the Spring Thunder Crossbow, and both are starting gear rather than finds. Each takes its own ammunition, and each ammunition family comes in a basic type plus five elemental ones.
Weapon | Reveal Source | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Bow | Xbox Developer Direct, January 2026 | Primary ranged option | Used for stealth picks and softening priority targets before melee |
Crossbow | PlayStation State of Play, February 2026 | Secondary ranged option | Slower draw, heavier hits, complementary to the bow |
Weapon | Ammunition | Profile |
|---|---|---|
Zangetsu Bow | Arrows | High damage per shot with a draw time to pay for it. Built by a Golem from the remains of its comrades, which is the flavour the game hangs on it. Handed over by the Foreman in Subcity 01 during the opening chapter. |
Spring Thunder Crossbow | Bolts | Low damage per bolt but a fast reload and a much larger carrying limit, so it suits sustained chip damage and status build-up rather than single-shot punishment. Emma starts with it. |
Both enhance at the workbench aboard the Cleanse Walker, and their upgrade tracks are separate from the sword line: memory chips fund ranged upgrades and the projectiles themselves, while generator devices fund the blades.
Ammunition splits into two mirrored families of six. Basic arrows and basic bolts carry no element and are the raw-damage option, with the arrow doing considerably more per hit than the bolt and the bolt carrying far more of itself. The other five are elemental and have to be unlocked before they can be crafted at all.
Type | Arrow | Bolt |
|---|---|---|
Basic | Arrows | Bolts |
Fire | Fire Arrows | Fire Bolts |
Lightning | Lightning Arrows | Lightning Bolts |
Poison | Poison Arrows | Poison Bolts |
Acid | Acid Arrows | Acid Bolts |
Explosive | Explosive Arrows | Explosive Bolts |
Each elemental type has a manual behind it. Manuals are found out in the world or bought from wandering merchants and Golem traders for a few thousand Amber apiece, and once a manual is unlocked that ammunition replenishes on rest rather than having to be scavenged. Collecting every one of them is what the Manual Maniac achievement asks for. Ammunition can also be pulled off enemies mid-fight.
Matching ammunition to a target's weakness is the main lever ranged play has, and it is the standard advice before a boss: the paired fight against Kunai and Kirin, for instance, is weak to poison on both halves, so poison arrows and poison bolts are what to stock.
Emma carries up to three ammunition slots that can be filled with bow arrows or crossbow bolts. Both projectile types support elemental infusions, allowing the player to specialise into fire, poison, or other status applications depending on what the encounter calls for. The slot system means that ranged damage is not a single resource but a small loadout to manage between fights.
Ammunition is finite within an encounter, which keeps ranged play tactical rather than dominant. Players who lean heavily on the bow or crossbow plan their shots for priority targets, environmental triggers, or targets the katana cannot reach.
Pick off enemies at range without alerting the rest of a group, opening the encounter with reduced numbers.
Soften up dangerous targets before committing to a melee approach, trading a slot for a damage head start.
Apply elemental status from the safety of distance, then switch to the katana to capitalise on the burning, poisoned, or otherwise weakened target.
Deal damage to flying or distant threats that katana strikes cannot reach.
Emma can also approach enemies from behind for silent stealth kills, which complements the ranged kit. The design intent across all three options is flexibility: players who want to brute-force a fight can, but the game rewards scouting an encounter and thinning it out with the bow, crossbow, or stealth before committing to the main combat loop.
Ranged play is not a named tree so much as one branch of Emma's skill list, rooted in Tracking Shot and gated behind the attribute that raises Skill Power. Tracking Shot itself infuses arrows with blight so they track a target and pierce several times, and the branch runs outward from there.
Skill | Unlocks At | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Tracking Shot | Root skill | Arrows track foes and pierce up to four times |
Lucky Shot | Tracking Shot level 2 | Chance for a shot not to consume ammunition |
Roll | Tracking Shot level 2 | A quick roll, tapped twice |
Enhance Bow, Enhance Crossbow | Tracking Shot level 3 | Straight damage increases for each weapon |
Assassination Assist | Tracking Shot level 4 | |
Assassination Recovery | Tracking Shot level 4 | Restores Emma's HP on a successful assassination |
Magic Bullet | Tracking Shot level 5 | Tracking shots loop back around after their first hit |
Auto-Load | Tracking Shot level 5 | Defeating a foe has a 50 percent chance to replenish every ranged weapon |
Scatter-Shot | Tracking Shot level 5 with Hair level 5 | Each projectile splits into three |
Entangled Shot | Tracking Shot level 5 with Entanglement Overdrive level 5 | Entangled attacks trickle the Entanglement Gauge back during Overdrive |
Spirit Stones cover the rest of the ranged economy: Sharpshooter returns FP for exploiting a weakness at range, Homing Shots adds tracking to projectiles, Empowered Headshots raises damage on head hits, and Faster Reloads and Fire Rate both target the crossbow specifically.
The Sharpshooter stone returns FP for exploiting a weakness at range, and the late Entangled Shot skill trickles it back during Overdrive, but ranged kills on their own do not generate FP for Koo's command menu in the same way a successful parry does. That is the design tension: ranged play is safer, but a katana-and-parry build feeds Koo's Bloom Arts faster. Players who lean into ranged combat lose some of the explosive Bloom Arts pressure but gain control over how each fight opens.
In practice the most flexible build mixes both. Open with a ranged shot or stealth kill to thin numbers, switch to the katana, and use parries to refill FP for the Bloom Arts that handle remaining elites or boss stagger windows.
Emma can also stack buffs onto her katana using consumable items. Those buffs are designed to trigger on a successful parry, which means the ranged and stealth pillars support her melee loop rather than replacing it. Spirit Stones add another layer on top, with effects that compound when the parry trigger fires.
