Servers and Regions
September 16, 2026 at 04:46 AM
Initial version (2026-09-16)
Soulbound: Online runs as a set of regional servers rather than one shared world. You pick a server when you create a character, and that character lives there. You can hold any number of characters on different servers, but progress is per character and per server, so a character on one server carries nothing over to another.
There is no character transfer between servers. This is the single most important thing to get right before you start playing, because the fix after the fact is starting over. If you are playing with friends, everyone needs to create their characters on the same server. The studio has said it hopes to add transfers later to improve the experience, but as of September 2026 none exists.
Two things happened to the server list within a week of each other, and they pulled in opposite directions.
Date | Change | Effect |
|---|---|---|
September 3, 2026 | Partial consolidation | US West 1 was folded into US Central 1, and EU West 3 into Europe West 1. Both closing regions had only a small number of active players, and merging brought those communities onto busier servers. |
September 10, 2026 | Six new servers | New servers opened across the United States, Europe and Asia, specifically Japan, raising total capacity. All six started empty. |
The consolidation cost affected players roughly 20 milliseconds of extra ping, which the studio described as negligible. The closed regions were kept visible in the server dropdown and now reroute automatically, so an old shortcut still lands you in the right place. The studio framed the merge as server maintenance rather than a capacity problem, and said a new region would follow, which is what arrived a week later.
The six new servers were pitched at players who wanted a clean start: everyone on them begins at the same time with nothing built, which is a different experience from joining a server where the early economy has already been worked out. A 35 percent discount ran alongside the opening.
Server capacity has been an active problem since launch. The opening days of Early Access were dominated by it: a set of bugs capped how far each server environment could scale, so far fewer players could get in than planned, and six new player-facing environments were deployed in the days afterwards with the capacity of each existing one raised.
Work has continued since. The performance patch of September 4, 2026 raised the player cap on the Tutorial and Virelda maps and cut the amount of state a server broadcasts when a player spawns, taking a joining player from roughly 75 broadcasts in the hub down to about 6. Joining a full room no longer waits for every player's account setup in series, and a player is let into the world within 20 seconds even when the account service is slow. A server-side memory leak that made memory use climb as game server instances cycled was closed in the September 3 patch.
The client is English-first. Dedicated Chinese and Japanese fonts for dialogue and tutorial text shipped in September 2026, which is a rendering change rather than a translation. A first pass of full localisation covering dialogue and interface text is on the studio's plan, starting with Japanese, Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese, and was described as partially out in the roadmap update of September 2, 2026.
Server names, counts and regions describe the live build as of mid-September 2026 and are actively changing. For what each patch changed, see Update History.
