Zeverland builds around free-form construction rather than a catalogue of pre-made modules. The studio set that out in November 2025: players are not limited to snapping together finished rooms, and key locations on the map can be claimed outright and turned into a shelter instead of raising one from nothing in an empty field. That second route ties building directly to Territory and Claims, because a claim is what converts a building you found into a home you own.
Everything described below comes from two pre-alpha tech tests, both of which were fully wiped, and from the studio's own posts about work in progress. No layout, cost or limit from either test build carries into the shipping game.
Building During Combat

Construction is not locked out while zombies are nearby. The studio confirmed in November 2025 that combat does not block building, and that the limiter is encumbrance instead. Survivors can only carry so much material, so what you can throw up mid-fight is bounded by what is in your pack rather than by a combat state that switches building off. That is a deliberate design choice and it has not been revised in any later post.
Build Tools Reported Finished in August 2026
In its community letter of 2026-08-03 the studio listed three building features as work completed over the previous month.
Feature | What the studio described |
|---|---|
Fly-cam build mode | A free god's-eye camera for building, usable on your own territory. |
Grid snapping and alignment | Snapping and alignment aids for placing furniture and decor. |
Batch dismantling | Taking down several pieces in one action instead of one at a time. |
The sequencing on two of those is worth noting, because both were discussed long before they were reported as built. Batch dismantling was promised for the following test back on 2025-11-17, and a god's-eye building mode was offered in reply to a player question on 2026-07-01. The August letter is the first time the studio described either as developed rather than intended. None of the three has appeared in a public build, since no playtest has run since the second one closed on 2026-07-02.
What Went Wrong in the First Test
The first pre-alpha tech test in November 2025 produced a long list of building complaints, all of which the studio acknowledged on 2025-11-17.
Placement worked by dragging only
Structures could not be dismantled upward
Foundations were fixed in place and sat too high
Stairs were oversized, with no alternative sizes
There was no guidance showing where a piece could legally go
Dismantling was slow
Crosshair height was limited while placing
The commitments the studio made in response were better targeting logic and build-distance limits, additional stair types, and camera-aware dismantling so that looking up at a roof is enough to select and remove it. Those are the fixes the studio said it would carry into the next test rather than things that have been shown working. The rest of that build is covered on First Pre-Alpha Tech Test.
The Second Test
Shelters and homes could not be upgraded in the second pre-alpha tech test, and on 2026-06-27 the studio called the whole build and upgrade experience unpolished and still in progress. One small confirmed detail survives from that build: storage boxes placed on the ground can be stacked on top of each other, which was the nearest thing to vertical storage available. Generators, wiring and lights were also present in the same build without a tutorial, which is covered on Power and Electricity. The full test record is on Second Pre-Alpha Tech Test.
Workbenches sit at the boundary between building and crafting. Some of them burn fuel, and the second test shipped with no workbench tutorial at all. See Crafting and Modification for how they are used.
Announced Construction Work
Item | Status |
|---|---|
Permanent roads outside your territory | Requested by players and agreed to by the studio on 2026-06-30. Announced, not built. |
Ziplines | Named as a refinement target on the July 2026 Roadmap. |
NPC and building polish | Also named as a refinement target on the same roadmap. |
Larger maps with richer points of interest | A roadmap line as well, which matters for building because every point of interest is a potential shelter. |
Shelters and Vehicles
A fixed shelter is not the only kind of home the studio has described. Vehicles are framed as mobile homes rather than transport, with living, storage and combat modules announced for mounting on the body, and one of the game's stock examples of freeform construction is welding a bed into an RV. See Vehicles and RVs. A shelter is also where recruited survivors live, work and stand guard, and they need a toilet placed inside the territory or they will use the ground instead: see NPC Companions.
