Cooking is one of the systems the studio rebuilt rather than tuned. The rebuild was announced in the community letter of 2026-01-21, and its stated goal was a high degree of freedom: ingredients combine as freely as weapon parts do in Crafting and Modification instead of being locked to a fixed recipe book. That is the same design principle the whole game runs on, applied to a pot.
How the Rebuilt System Works
Element | What the studio described |
|---|---|
Freeform ingredients | Ingredients mix as freely as weapon assembly rather than following a fixed recipe list. |
Spices | Spices grant buffs to the finished dish. |
Unconventional additives | Things that are not conventionally food can go into a dish. |
Poisoning | Because additives are not restricted, one player can poison another player's food. The studio published its own advice alongside the feature: think twice before eating something a stranger hands you. |
The poisoning line is the studio's own, published as part of the rebuilt system rather than inferred from it. Since that announcement the game has moved to an explicitly cooperative direction, with player-versus-player content set aside as of 2026-08-03, and the studio has not said how food tampering sits inside that direction. See PvE and PvP.
Food Expiration
Food goes off. In the second pre-alpha tech test expiration was measured in real-life hours, which meant stores rotted while players were logged out and returning to a full larder was not something you could count on. Players raised it, and on 2026-07-01 the studio agreed to retune expiration to in-game time and to exempt canned food from spoiling entirely. That retune is announced work and has not appeared in a public build. The test it came from is covered on Second Pre-Alpha Tech Test.
Canned food being singled out fits the setting. Zeverland opens in the first minutes of the apocalypse rather than years afterwards, with roughly 2026-era technology still standing, so tins, vending machines and stocked pantries are part of the starting world rather than rare relics. Vending machines can be broken open for drinks and pantries can be raided: see Looting and Scavenging.
Where Ingredients Come From
Three sources are confirmed. Scavenging supplies packaged and canned food from houses, shops and machines. Farming and Fishing supplies crops and fish, both confirmed as present and both named as refinement targets on the July 2026 Roadmap. And Survival Needs is what all of it services: hunger and thirst are two of the three needs the studio has named, with stamina the third, and all three drained too fast in the first test.
A microwave exists as a placeable, usable item, confirmed through a second-test bug that made it unusable inside a territory. Some workbenches burn fuel, which is the other half of running a kitchen; both are covered on Power and Electricity.
Cooks in the Shelter
Chefs are one of the four survivor roles named in first-party copy, alongside tailors, construction workers and security. Companion food handling was rough in the second test: the studio acknowledged on 2026-08-03 that survivors raiding the fridge took every copy of an item rather than one, and that survivors sent to pick apples ate them instead of bringing them back. Behaviour logic was to be adjusted. See NPC Companions.
