Workers are hireable NPCs in Windrose that you assign to crafting stations at your base. Each worker adds a passive bonus to the station they are attached to. As of version 0.10.0, the game has four hireable workers, one for each of the four main crafting disciplines (alchemy, tailoring, cooking, gunpowder).
Find the worker at their home base in one of the faction settlements.
Pay 500 Piastre to hire them (all four workers share the same flat cost).
Return to your base and open the crafting menu of the station the worker is assigned to.
Activate the Worker tab within the station's interface to slot them in.

Workers do not need to be physically led back to your base; the assignment is done through the station's menu once you have hired them. You can swap assignments later.
Rosalinda Mercer — Alchemist. Located at Tortuga's lower-bend market near the coast. Doubles Clay Bottle production and grants a 30% chance to craft an extra elixir per recipe.
Jasper Crowe — Tailor. Located in Tortuga's main market near the Rogue Buccaneers Provisioner. Grants a 30% chance to return upgrade materials when upgrading armor or clothing.
Black Axel — Cook. Located at the People of Tortuga base (a nearby island, not inside Tortuga itself). Grants a 30% chance to craft an extra meal each time you cook.
Mortar Joe — Powderman. Located at the Brethren of the Coast base. Increases Gunpowder production by 50%, or grants a 30% chance to craft an extra bag of Gunpowder depending on the source (community guides phrase the benefit differently but agree on the magnitude).
Each worker corresponds to one of four crafting stations:
Alchemy Table — Rosalinda Mercer.
Armor and Clothing Workshop — Jasper Crowe.
Cooking Fire (including upgrades like the Cutting Table) — Black Axel.
Millstones — Mortar Joe.
Community guides generally recommend this order based on payback:
Rosalinda Mercer first — alchemy output compounds fastest because healing potions are used constantly.
Mortar Joe second — once you have started the gunpowder chain in the Foothills, his 50% boost is enormous.
Jasper Crowe third — becomes critical once you start upgrading rare armor pieces to high tiers.
Black Axel fourth — most valuable for players who batch-cook stat buff meals before boss runs.
Launch-week developer communications suggest additional worker NPCs will be added in future patches. The current four cover alchemy, tailoring, cooking, and gunpowder; future workers may cover tanning, shipbuilding, weaponsmithing, or other crafting disciplines. Check Patch Notes for updates.
Outside the four station workers listed above, a separate NPC category exists at Tortuga: the Recruitment Vendor. Unlike the standard worker contracts that cost Piastres, the Recruitment Vendor uses gold coins, a currency earned from faction side quests and specific quest rewards rather than routine loot. Gold coins cannot be exchanged for Piastres, so a worker bought through this vendor cannot be substituted with a normal cash payment.
Farming Contractor: the Recruitment Vendor's primary offering in the current build is the Farming Contractor. The contract costs 10 gold coins, and once placed at the farming bench at base camp, the Contractor automates crop production. Each job takes 50 seeds of the chosen crop plus 20 silver coins as payment. After roughly 8 real-time hours the bench returns all 50 seeds intact plus a substantial crop yield. Because the cycle continues while the player is offline, the Farming Contractor is especially valuable for daily players who log in once per session and collect the previous day's harvest before starting a new job.
Workers stay at base permanently and do not follow the player into the world. They do not appear on the ship, they do not fight alongside the player, and they do not consume inventory slots during exploration. Their entire value comes from station usage at the outpost, which means a worker is only worth the hire cost if the corresponding station sees regular traffic. A Rosalinda hire with no Alchemy Table activity is wasted Piastres; the same Piastres spent on Black Axel for a base that runs daily cooking sessions returns value every batch.
Paying the hire price does not activate the worker's bonus. After returning to camp, the player must interact with the matching station (Alchemy Table for Rosalinda, Armor and Clothing Workshop for Jasper Crowe, Cooking Fire for Black Axel, Millstones for Mortar Joe) and select the worker from the station's Worker tab. Until this assignment is done, the perk is inactive even though Piastres have already been spent. This is the single most common cause of players reporting that a hired worker "does nothing".
