Once useful, these items now serve as decorations.
Large Fishing Barrel is a placed decoration in the Decorations category, filed under Miscellaneous. As the description notes, the barrel no longer has an active fishing function: it is now purely cosmetic and its only effect is the Comfort it adds to a camp.
Works only within the Bonfire range.
Like every decoration, the barrel must sit inside the radius of a Bonfire to count toward Comfort. Placed outside the radius it is scenery only.
Comfort +1 Comfort bonuses in this category do not stack.
It contributes to the Miscellaneous Comfort category, which does not stack, so adding a second miscellaneous piece such as the smaller Fishing Barrel gives no extra Comfort beyond the single +1. The Comfort System page explains how the various category bonuses combine.

The recipe is cheap, needing only basic Wood for the staves and Rope for the bindings, both early materials. That makes the barrel one of the simplest Comfort decorations to put down while a camp is still being established.

The barrel is part of the Decoration: Fishing Barrels group of buildable props, alongside the standard Fishing Barrel.
Because the Miscellaneous Comfort category does not stack, there is no benefit to placing both the Large Fishing Barrel and the smaller Fishing Barrel for Comfort. Choose whichever size fits the camp layout, then spend remaining decoration slots on pieces from other Comfort categories such as Ship Models or Food Displays, which each grant their own separate +1.
